Grandma is not feeling well. We watched Sherlock Holmes, the one the Jude Law and Robert Downey, Jr. Good popcorn fun. Made me remember that I liked the second one better.

skimom2, I thought the '70s Invasion was a wonderful movie, right up to and through the end. Just completely creepy, compelling, and well done.
It really was. I'm a Donald Sutherland fan, plus Leonard Nimoy, plus Jeff Goldblum. The only eye roller was that they KNEW they were running from pods and Brooke Adams chooses a dress and heels as her outfit?!

Gaslight.

Tonight was TCM night, because TCM has Ingrid Bergman night. We watched Casablanca first, which I won't bore you with, because that wonderful movie has been talked about enough.

Gaslight was a really good movie. There was a little dissonance, but was a nicely done, creepy, well developed thriller that had you knowing the psychology piece of manipulation ("No, don't!!") while completely understanding how it could develop. The ending was good with a little of its own dissonance but with a soliloquy and denouement that was wonderful.

Ingrid Bergman got an Oscar for this one, and she deserved it.

If Ingrid Berman was raised British, why the accent? And Joseph Cotten was obviously American but working in Scotland Yard? And the ending was so lax on police procedure that it sent a shudder - but not enough to take down this thoroughly enjoyable film, not for me.

Continuing on, Grandma watched Europa '51 after that, but I intuited in the first 10 minutes that it wasn't my movie, and bagged it. I caught bits and snatches, and I'm convinced i was right. The Rossellini psychology study ain't my thing.

The Interview (1998)

No, not the Seth Rogen movie, you uncultured swine. ;;D
This is an Aussie thriller, very well made, lots of twists and turns. If you liked The Usual Suspects, this might be right up your alley.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
8/10
I want to give it more, because I watched it at an importune moment, but it was great nonetheless (although the continuity between the show and movie is a little wrong in parts). To me, Twin Peaks (I finished it last weekend, really good, it had ups and downs, but the finale was really terrific) was at its best when it was dark and uncomfortable, so a movie mainly based on that appealed to me.

Always liked this one myself. How about spunky young Angela Lansbury, eh?

It was odd but entertaining to see her young and with a Cockney-ish (at least to my American ears and understanding) accent. If I remember the rundown right, she got an Academy nomination for her introductory role in this one.

Yep, best supporting actress nomination. She was just eighteen then. Her best role was yet to come: Elvis's Mom in Blue Hawaii.

The Shooting (1966) - Jack Nicholson, Warren Oates
Ride The Whirlwind (1966) - Jack Nicholson, Cameron Mitchell

Two excellent westerns from the Roger Corman family of filmmakers that are on the same "Criterion Collection" blu-ray. Jack Nicholson wrote one of the scripts. Both of these films were shot at the same time (to save money - Roger Corman was a master of the low budget film). Whenever you see a "Criterion Collection" blu-ray, you are in for a treat. Many of these are excellent obscure films that are rescued, restored and given the full blu-ray treatment.
