Honestly, I thought it was cheesy. I only watched because my daughter said she heard the ending was the best.
!NO SPOILERS!
I did think it was a realistic ending for the characters.
You think The Mist movie is cheesy, but that the ending was realistic? Oh wow, you and I could not be more polar opposite. Except for its gratuitous anti-religiousness and unrealistic ending, I adore this movie. I'm a scifi/horror freak, though, and so I seek movies which do such well, and this is one. The visual effects are fantastically scary as hell; they do sK's book great justice, imho.

In my defense, I don't remember the book. I thought the first effects were cheesier than the rest (I don't want to go into detail, to avoid spoilers). As a parent, I could see maybe making the same decision that the main character did under those circumstances.

Which decision? Don't worry about spoilers, just put what you write in a spoiler.

after seeing his wife was dead, and running out of fuel inside the mist, he ended his child's life quickly to avoid what he was sure would be a torturous death in the mist. He didn't know if the mist was spread throughout the entire country or if it would ever lift, but he DID know what it was capable of. As soon as he shot his son/friends I said to my daughter "now watch, the most will lift" and totally imagined his pain at what he'd just done.

Yay, I did my first spoiler correctly!

WTG!!! The main problem I have with how The Mist movie ends, other than my feeling that the book ending would've been better, is twofold
1) how quickly the decision to commit suicide is reached. It's just not believable that no matter their circumstances and after a couple of minutes or even a few hours people can simply shoot themselves or let someone else do it. It's bad moviemaking, it's betrayal of the suspension of disbelief; and 2) that in the end Mankind wins the day. Now that is cheesy and smacks of 50s' fear of nuclear proliferation and it's a happy ending. Granted, it's not a typical happy ending, but the irony isn't clever enough for me.

I agree with you there.
while I think it was realistic that they made that decsion, I do think four adults agreeing with that so quickly is far-fetched...unless they discussed it at length beforehand offscreen before setting out? I came thisclose to crying when the mist lifted. I would've had to point the gun at the soldiers to get them to just shoot me dead. What else did he have to live for?

Can you tell me in a spoiler how the book ended?

As I recall
the book ends as they drive off having no idea where to go or what their fate will be. The reason I love the book's ending is that it supports what imho the story is all about, that in the end Man gets his due for abusing his authority on the Earth. I also love the idea of evolution being the ultimate master of the fate of all living things. The Mist is about man's tendency to overstep natural boundaries until nature gets rid of him.

The Shooting (1966) - Jack Nicholson, Warren Oates
Ride The Whirlwind (1966) - Jack Nicholson, Cameron Mitchell

Two excellent westerns from the Roger Corman family of filmmakers that are on the same "Criterion Collection" blu-ray. Jack Nicholson wrote one of the scripts. Both of these films were shot at the same time (to save money - Roger Corman was a master of the low budget film). Whenever you see a "Criterion Collection" blu-ray, you are in for a treat. Many of these are excellent obscure films that are rescued, restored and given the full blu-ray treatment.
My most favorite movie 'Mulholland Drive' by David Lynch is finally(!!!!!) being released as a Criterion Bluray. I cannot wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Criterion collection blu-rays are awesome. Here is a list I found that lists 50 of the awesome-est.

The 50 Best Criterion Collection Releases - Film.com

I've only seen a couple of the films on that list so I'm going to try and see some of them.

One of my favorite Criterion Collection films (at least in terms of biggest improvement) is the 1960 Lord Of The Flies. I had seen a supposedly restored dvd version of this film a few years before and the Criterion blu-ray was 1,000 times better. The dvd version was washed out looking and the dialog was hard to hear. When I saw the Criterion blu-ray, I could not believe I was watching the same film, it looked fantastic and the sound was crystal clear. I have several of the Criterion collection films and I love them all.

I have Benjamin Button on Criterion but only on dvd.

My copy of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a sweet, double-disc Criterion edition with all sorts of extra goodies. Includes a feature-length documentary of the BBC's Omnibus telly-show Fear and Loathing in Hollywood. Also, feature commentary by Hunter Thompson himself. More fun than a hit of Sunshine acid.

Kill Your Darlings

Harry Potter as Ginsberg. Stupid, inaccurate. Bah.

I watched this one. I didn't know anything about the real story beforehand and after I watched it, looked up some articles on the story. It seems they really did Lucien Carr wrong in the movie. According to what I read, that Kammerer guy was more like a lifelong stalker to Carr than the way it was portrayed in the movie.
