I watched Citizen Kane for the first time ever. I'm going to have to do some reading on why this always tops the lists of important movies. I'm not seeing it. It was probably innovative for its time, and it is a wonderful look into the old days and old ways, and the Rosebud thing is interesting to me. But overall, I don't think it's that great of a movie.

I then watched a Woody Allen, Zelig. I liked this one. Quirky.

DJ - did you read the Mia Farrow article in Vanity Fair? You know how I feel about Woody, but I'm having problems with him after reading the article.
No, the new issue? I know you love Woody, and I do think he has a brilliant, creative mind. But, this child thing...sheesh, I don't know what to think. Did he? Didn't he? I think she's a nut too. What do you think?

I watched The Station Agent, with Peter Dinklage, made pre-Game of Thrones fame. Also starring Patricia Clarkson and Bobby Canavale.

I was drawn to it because of Dinklage, who I love as Tyrion in GoT. He does not project as much confidence in this role, but that is due to the nature of the character, a self-made outcast, because of his size, who learns to trust people and how much richer friends can make us feel.

I liked it. Good little movie.

I saw the coolest thing come up in suggestions for me at Youtube yesterday. I didn't have much of an idea of what it was other than it looked spooky. >_<
I clicked it, and the time was like 44 minutes. I think it was like early '70's looking or maybe late '60's. It ended up being like a little mini movie.
The description said 'a story by M.R. James'. It was awesome! I didn't know who M.R. James was but after I saw this I researched him. He's kind of a 19th Century Stephen King.... he writes the spooky books, then eventually they get turned into movies. XD XD

But his work from this one, had a really awesome Gothic feel to it. Made with little, if any special effects, a small, convincing cast and still managed to be creepy as heck! The scenery was awesome in a spooky way! Definitely watch in the dark. I love old British horror. This particular story I guess is called 'A Warning to the Curious'.

Watched Killing Season over the weekend.
A movie about revenge of a Servian veteran (John Travolta) against an American veteran (Robert De Niro) in the Appalacian woods of Georgia, 18 years after the Bosnian War ended. Interesting concept but wrong cast and far too drawn out IMO. De Niro was okay in the role, but Travolta was the wrong choice for his role.

Famous quote from "Network" - when I saw it back in the 70s I didn't really GET it View attachment 788

Watch it again because TV news today looks a lot like it did in that movie. :icon_eek: Great flick. In the early days of TV, the network news didn't operate "for profit" but used the profits from the other programming to pay for the news (at least in theory). The movie "Network" takes a look at what news for ratings or profit would look like. Network news today doesn't quite look like Network but there are tons of so called news shows that do (especially on cable). We put a lot of crazy people on the air today (Glen Beck anyone?) just like they did in that movie.

I really liked the station agent. It was a quiet movie, but I really thought Peter was excellent.

Okay - I was 19 in 1976 so maybe not exactly "at the top of my game" - for all I know, maybe I had smoked some of that "rope" that was so popular back in the 70s.

That would explain my confusion.

I read a book of short stories by James. Interesting, but left me a tad bored. Very old proper type British writing. The premise of some of the stories was good though, just lost in all the proper English prose.

Okay, admitting a guilty pleasure here- I watched Under The Cherry Moon starring Prince last night. Stupid movie, but at least I get to see him when he was at the top of his game. Lots of mugging for the camera. This is the movie that Mary Lambert (director of Pet Semetary) was to direct but was fired from (by his Royal Bad*ss) after about a week or two of filming. (I would love to her what she has to say about that!) Prince took over the reins and it became what it is- another vanity project with some bad acting, but some quite funny moments in it. It also features Kristin Scott Thomas' first American film role and she is rough around the edges but good. Filmed in black and white. Beautiful locations from the south of France! Haven't seen this movie in years!

Oh yeah I could totally see the 'proper' coming through...
when they were digging holes with suits on.
XD XD First thing I thought is 'literally' how proper and British that was lol
