That it was a random attack would've driven me nuts. I know stuff like that happens in real life, but when it's a movie (or book) I want an explanation, gosh darnit!
Random scares the ****e out of me! The Strangers is the scariest movie I've ever seen :p That's what worked about Hush for me. It was the various stupidities that ruined it.

Second scariest movie I've ever seen--lol. I've seen it once (and once for the German original--the remake was pretty much shot for shot of that), and it's burned into my brain. I can't even express how horrifying random home invasion is to me.
It has an amazing 5-6 minute uncut scene with Naomi Watts preparing food and giving the eggs to that kid. Truly is a creepy movie and has lots of make-you-jump scenes.

It's Austrian I think. Michael Haneke directed the original and the remake, which is probably why it's pretty close shot for shot (I haven't seen the remake so I'll take your word for that).

I love that movie, the one with Burt Lancaster. Not so much the one with Val Kilmer.

Dig the 1932 version directed by Erle C. Kenton, starring Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi, called Island of Lost Souls. If, that is, you're a good boy and haven't broken the law. Because, you know, *sigh* he who breaks the law must go to the house of pain.

What happens in the House of Pain? Why, you jump around! Jump around!

Sho nuff I got props.

I really liked this movie. I guess the cheese stands alone.

This is interesting. The enjoyment of fiction, especially genre fiction, relies heavily on the willing suspension of disbelief. Trouble is across a wide audience you’re going to encounter a wider range of tolerance levels, and what jerks one person out of the story will just wash over another unnoticed.

I watched Hush on Saturday night and I enjoyed it a lot. For me it’s a very neat, smart, economical little chiller/thriller that works hard and doesn’t outstay it’s welcome. The “stupidities” I thought worked in the context of the film and for the most part were well explained.

But, I also watched It Follows not so long ago which is another low budget and critically acclaimed horror (I have a film critic friend who put it in his top 10 for 2015, all movies, not just horror). That was one where I couldn’t get on board with some things that I found stupid and which ultimately spoiled the film for me.

I think it’s tougher for filmmakers in a way, the audience had less investment with something they know will last a couple of hours and require little imagination as opposed to something that needs a longer term commitment and a decent amount of effort from the reader (whether it feels like work or not.).

One thing I did notice in Hush was that when they swept past the book shelf a certain horror author’s name was prominently displayed. I don’t think it was an accident so, you know, at the very least the film makers seem to have had the very best of intentions.

I was confused to see It Follows on so many 'best of' lists. Another one that started with an interesting conceit but dropped the ball. And I do agree that it's difficult to make horror movies--they'll never 'work' for everyone.

Watching 'The Big Lebowski' - gosh, I'd forgotten how strangely good this movie is. :)
