Silence was based on Thomas Harris' book,Red Dragon, which is even better than the movie if you can dig it,give it a read if you get a chance..don't think the sequel movies lived up to the original silence movie or this book..
SILENCE is its own book, and a damn good one. I had to replace my copy 5 times before I stopped "loaning" it to people--lol. RED DRAGON was made into 2 movies: MANHUNTER (my favorite) and RED DRAGON. it takes place before SILENCE, and is also a great book. I didn't think that HANNIBAL or HANNIBAL RISING were nearly as good.

12 Years a Slave...very uncomfortable and disturbing to watch...but everyone should watch it. I haven't cried so hard during a movie in a long time. Immediately downloaded the book on my Kindle.
Afterwards, I am just in a funk...owning people and treating them worse than animals...it keeps blowing my mind that it truly happened. And in 2015, racism is still so prevalent...I get so angry thinking about it.
I hated the slave owner but his wife was just evil. Both were. This is the first film that's depicted slavery in a more realistic way, in my opinion. I was very uncomfortable watching it. Schindler's List affected me in a similar way. How was the book?

I thought it was interesting. It was less...dramatic, maybe?...than the movie. Less showy. I found it more affecting, though, because it was the man himself that wrote it, about his own experiences. Movies about slavery always strike me as low-key more focused on or intersted in the white owners than the slaves, and this one was no exception.

I've never heard of that one, but I admire both actors :)

It's very good. I saw it a long time ago and I think it was a made for HBO movie. It's about one policeman's relentless pursuit of a serial killer during the old Soviet Union era. His superiors refused to admit that the Soviet Union had anything as Western as Serial Killers and denied him the resources he needed. Based on a true story.

Perfect summary, fljoe0.

(skimom, I mainly chose the movie because I love Donald Sutherland.)

You're right,I don't know what I was thinking last night,I got the Manhunter movie tangled up in my memory with the book..poor Freddy Lounds, though some might think that is the proper treatment for all members of the media.. ;)

Took LilMan to see PAN at the kids' movie. Kind of a strange movie, but Hugh Jackman was very good. I think I'd like to see it again.

Side question: Why are British kid actors miles better than American?
i personally think they still believe in the craft of acting. The hard work. Not some self-serving ego trip, but acting for the greater good.

the greater good.

The only one I've read is Hannibal (loved it and have reread it too). Found Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal Rising, but haven't read them yet. All three are hardcover first editions in very good condition. If you need any of them for your collection, let me know. I'd be happy to give them to you! :)

Being a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory big fan,I have the book that Julie Dawn Cole,ms Veruca Salt, wrote about acting in the movie..and she is talks about how she was trained from a young age,not just voice but acting, and it is clear she wasn't just some random kid off the street that got the part.Sounds like she worked hard and got a plum role, though back then she didn't get paid a lot..is a good book,if you like the movie, discussing the making of that film..
