The Lady In The Lake. (Black and white, Philip Marlowe mystery.) It was ok but I kept wanting to fast forward.

Oh, I hate that adaption. The whole camera POV gimmick gets old really fast. And Robert Montgomery as Marlow? Blech. Almost as bad as the Dick Powell Murder, My Sweet.

The only movie Marlows I can stomach are Bogie (The Big Sleep) and Mitchum (Farewell, My Lovely).

Eliot Gould and James Garner could, and should, have been great Marlows; unfortunately the films in which they played the P.I. just suck.

We need a new Marlow movie. What modern actor would make a great Phillip Marlow? Hmmmm...a real noodle scratcher, that. Worthy of its own thread, I'd wot.

Sorry, I can talk Marlow all day. Chandler was GOD!

I've only read The Big Sleep. I'm not a Marlowe aficionado but I agree a new incarnation would be great. How about Fassbender?

How about NO, ya crazy Doc. Heh heh. Nah, just joshing ya. But seriously...no. Magneto doth not a Phillip Marlow make.

I'm thinking an honest to God, full bore adaption of my fave Chandler novel, The Long Goodbye. Robert Altman did one with Eliot Gould, but he was being a punk, and made fun of the noir genre. First off, it HAS TO TAKE PLACE IN THE SAME TIME PERIOD AS THE BOOK. I cannot stress this enough. I don't wanna see Marlow running around with a cell phone in his pocket, puffing an eCigarette, and frequenting hip hop dance clubs. As Tricky Dick used to say, that would be wrong.

You know what? I think Mark Ruffalo could pull it of. We need someone a tad cynical, a bit grizzled, but with enough sex appeal to attract the dames. Someone who can be snide and witty, a trifle sensitive, but tough when he has to be. Edward Norton could pull it off. (Oh snap, just realized I picked two Bruce Banners to play Marlow! So be it, they're great actors.)

Oh jeeze, these kinda thoughts keep me up at night.

Lol, I hear ya. Funny, I almost said Ruffalo but figured he was too buff and short. Marlowe is 6 feet and isn't a great fighter...he's often coming out on the worst side of a scrap. Edward Norton would be perfect, actually, now that you mention it.

Yeah. Marlowe always gets his butt kicked. And yeah, Norton is sounding good. Ruffalo may be too short, but I'm liking that idea as well. After all, Bogie was a scrawny little fella, and look how great The Big Sleep turned out.

Just as long as it ain't Idris Elba!

I watched The Road on netflix. VERY bleak and depressing, although Viggo Mortensen was very good. Not a feel-good movie, for sure!!
I absolutely think that Viggo Mortensen should have at least gotten an Oscar nod for that role (I actually think he deserved the Oscar). Too bleak for Oscar voters, though, I think. I know once was enough for me. There are a few films that I find outstanding that I can't imagine watching again, and this is one of them.

Norton's whiny voice would kill it for me. Just sayin'.

Watched Misery again on Netflix last night. I enjoyed it as much as the first time I saw it back in cinema. Kathy Bates' performance was a bit campy, but for the time it came out, it really was a strong performance by a leading lady and she deserved that Oscar. What has James Caan been up to these days though?

I don't mean to pry or anything with my question but you live in Canada or UK or somewhere other then the States? Because Misery isn't on my netflix :(
