Starrung Keanu Reeves. Husband is left alone for the weekend while wife/kids take a little vacay.
A couple of attractive and very young ladies show up asking to use his phone, and then there is a lot of trouble.
I only finished watching it to see what the possible reason was for everyone's actions.
there was none. It was random.
I wish I'd never even started it.
90 minutes of my life I will never get back.

Just started watching An American in Paris. Not sure why I've never watched this as Singin' in the Rain is one of my favorites.

I'm wondering--why does watching Gene Kelly sing and dance make me tear up? I think it's some sort of mixture of childhood nostalgia, awe of his talent, and sadness that he's not here anymore.

It's the appreciation and emotional impact of witnessing an ethereal level of virtuosity. It happens to people for a variety of things. If you're not "into" the event, you wonder how they could possibly feel that way. If you are invested, you wonder how others can't appreciate it like you do.

Sully.

Solid, well-told, well-acted, and enjoyable. Tom Hanks always does a good job, and no less so here. Good cast.

I felt a little sorry for the lead actress. Her entire assignment was to stay in the house and talk on the phone.

Clint Eastwood knows how to craft something watching and stirring at some level. This isn't his directorial poster child, but it was quite good, and we were glad we went.

I like that--an ethereal level of virtuosity. Just watch this guy--I especially love near the end when he looks to be jumping over one foot with the other.

I love this movie but I always fast forward through the dream sequence. I'm drawing a blank on the title but I like to play and sing the song he sings at night to the girl he falls for. They're on the river. Our Love Is Here To Stay, I believe.

10 Cloverfield Lane (very good), followed by a Danish zombie movie called What We Become (very good again). I need to update my pitiful total on the Halloween movie thread--this year isn't going to be anywhere near the total of the last couple of years, but I'm seeing a few, at least :)

Ever seen Xanadu, with Gene Kelly dancing alonside Olivia Newton John?
I feel like dragging out my long-form review for this one:

I like ELO, I thought.

I like Gene Kelly, I thought.

Oliver, Newton & John are always a pleasure to look at, I thought.

It's only £2.50 in the discount bin, I thought.

There are lots of enthusiastic comments on the IMDb, I thought.

How can I go wrong, I thought.

That shows me, I guess.

The producers of this movie clearly thought that Oliver, Newton & John were the reason for the popularity of Grease. Xanadu provides proof that Grease's success rests on Travolta's shoulders.

To be fair, Oliver, Newton & John are saddled with some fair old drivel here, and it required someone considerably less lightweight to actually make something of it (if, indeed, anyone could have). Where frothy comedy is required, Xanadu is a froth-free zone.

The ending is appalling. The entire last third of the film is spent making it clear that the role of a Muse is eternal and there is absolutely no quitting it in order to assume mortality. No exceptions. None. And, after getting special permission to attend the opening of Xanadu, the ascension back to Mount Helicon duly takes place. So who is the roller waitress who turns up in the closing shot? Is it our heroine, belatedly let off Musing (in complete contradiction of everything which has gone before)? Is it a waitress who, just by chance, also looks exactly like Oliver, Newton & John? Or is it Kira (not that I recall any of the Muses being named Kira) who has sneaked out, in which case this can only lead to trouble when Wilfred Hyde White - sorry, Zeus - catches up with her? This makes no sense and is unfair to everything which has gone before.

For a musical, the musical numbers are sparse, drab, and boring. Only Gene Kelly, in a gently unchallenging swansong, comes out of them with credit.

The animated sequence is pretentious and not very good.

ELO's music is not bad, though not among Jeff Lynne's finest.

Michael Beck brings a whole new dimension to the word "miscast."

Oliver, Newton & John conveys rosy-cheeked wholesomeness adequately enough but, when the film as a whole is so comprehensively substandard, it requires a bit more than "adequate" to cut the mustard. The mustard accordingly remains resolutely uncut.

Ah heck, everyone knows that movie sucked. I never said it was good, just said Olivia Neutron Bomb danced with Gene Kelly.

Inferno - the 3rd Robert Langdon/Da Vinci Code movie. Better than the incredible dumb 2nd one.
Doctor Strange - arrogant surgeon becomes a wizard. Harry Potter for grownups in Marvel's 14th feature. See it in 3D - it will blow your eyes out. Does Ditko proud.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back - generic action thriller sequel. Entertaining time-passer.
Ouija: Birth Of Evil - efficient horror.

Dead Reckoning (1947). Wow, how is it possible I'd never heard of this one? Freaking Bogart at his best, as an ex-GI who plays detective in order to find out what happened to his war buddy Johnny. Lizabeth Scott (kind of a bargain basement Lauren Bacall) as Johnny's sultry ex-girlfriend. A gritty noir classic featuring some snappy, hard-boiled voiceover narration by Bogie. My kind of flick.
