Crimson Peak

In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds - and remembers.

I liked it very much. I don't know how I missed it when it first came out.

Director Guillermo "Del Toro wanted the film to honor the "grand dames" of the haunted house genre, namely Robert Wise's The Haunting and Jack Clayton's The Innocents. The director intended to make a large-scale horror film in the tradition of those he grew up watching, such as The Omen, The Exorcist, and The Shining. He cited the latter as "another Mount Everest of the haunted house movie", praising the high production values and Stanley Kubrick's control over the large sets."

I first thought it would be cool for skimom2 and her LilMan and sir ghost19 and his tweenager but...no. No. Especially the
last 20minutes or so.

If you have a couple of hours for chills and thrills, I watched it here:

I'm off to make some pancakes and sausage. Have a great day!

Thank you, Siggie, for that review. After reading it, I had to have this movie on DVD. Thanks for the link, but I'd rather watch it on my television. Weird quirk. Thanks again. You're the best!

The Midnight Meat Train. Weird, tremendously violent (gotta know that from the title alone), pretty entertaining through the bulk of the movie, but ultimately unsatisfying--he penultimate scenes were bleh, and the ending was completely predictable. From a Clive Barker story. I wonder if that was the title of his story, because it doesn't make a lot of sense. They point out at least 5 times that all the icka happens on the first train after 2 AM. Maybe because it's midnight SOMEWHERE? lol

A Dog's Purpose. I frigging love this movie, no apologies. Then again, I'm biased because I love dogs and think every child should know the joy (and sorrow) of having one.
I'm going to have to go see that one before it is gone - it's now moved over to the cheap theatre but still that would be better than watching it on a smaller screen at home.

Tonight I watched a very good movie called "Me Before You"

I wondered about this movie. I liked the book much more than I expected to.

....yes, if my fading recall is true-that was the title of the story...

I want to read the book now!

I liked how she was true to both arguments for and against assisted suicide, and didn't subtly 'code' so you could tell which argument she thought was the 'right' one. I hope that came through in the movie. I went into the book with strong opinions on one side, and I liked that she made me look at the other side and acknowledge the strengths in that argument, as well. I came out with a more open mind--I love when that happens!

Did things happen at midnight in the story? I'll try to get my hands on a copy to see if it makes more sense than that aspect of the movie--lol

TMMT is from the first volume of Clive Barker's Books of Blood short-story collection. From what I recall, the title is used metaphorically, describing the last train that ran to nowhere at the dead of night. If balls-to-the-wall horror is your thing, then check these books out. If you've seen Candyman, Hellraiser, Nightbreed or The Lord of Illusions, then you have an inkling of what to expect.

Thank you! I've not read any of his short stories, just the novels. Some I've liked, some I haven't, but it hasn't been because of violence/gore. That doesn't bother me, as long as it makes sense in the story.

My favorite short story by Barker is In The Hills, The Cities. It was such a startling tale, not something that anyone has ever written or at least that I've read before or heard about anywhere. Very original.
