Remember what the poppy symbolizes now that we are coming upon November 11. Here is a brief history of the poem On Flander's Fields by a Canadian physican during the Great War. People of the Commonwealth, remember the poppy! If you are going to the Legion on the 11, do not forget to remove your caps or you will have to buy everybody a beer who is in there. PEACE

For our dear Americans, this poem was in response to In Flander's Fields and writter by an American lady..............
We Shall Keep the Faith

by Moina Michael, November 1918

Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields,
Sleep sweet - to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died.

We cherish, too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders Fields.

And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought
In Flanders Fields.

My dad was a veteran and he always had one of those poppies the veterans sell pinned to the visor in his truck. He'd buy a new one every year. Whenever I see them it makes me tear up-- in a good way. :smile2:

Bless all of our veterans.

This is how we in UK have been remembering the fallen. A very fitting tribute of over 800,000 poppies each hand made and placed around the moat at the Tower of London. They were all hand made and for sale with the proceeds going to various charities. I have purchased one in the remembrance of all the young boys who went to war thinking they were going on a big adventure and never came home. We will never forget!.

Learned this in elementary school. Its one poem that I never forgot because it is so poignant.

Did you hear about the poppy sales in Canada staropeace? Ever since the two soldiers were killed recently apparently the sales have skyrocketed.

I hope the Legion gets a lot of money to help with their support of the troops.
There was a story on the news last night about it.

They were saying this in Edmonton, too. I went to the 7-11 and got the last one there last night...as I was walking out, I spotted another on the stoop outside. I picked it up and went to my friend from India's store next door. She saw my poppy and told me she had just gotten on at the 7-11 and lost it. I handed the one I had just found to her. Amazing, eh?

The yellow daffodils have that little bit of white rubber (like a sleeve) to put on the end.

I will use this (if I can find it) or sometimes break an eraser off a pencil - try it - it works! (just hid the eraser under the fabric).
p.s. - that was cool what you did for your friend :biggrin2::grin:
