Random musing.

I really like the "lonely performer" genre of songs, although I can only think of three, and that probably isn't enough to make a genre.

1. "Stay" by Jackson Browne.
2. "Turn the Page" by Bob Seger. I discount the Metallica version of this song, and I do that with good authority, that being my kids who grew up in the Hair Band era and who still think Metallica's version was a travesty of Uncle Bob's soulful, gravely version. (They have the same visceral reaction to Faith Hill's version of "Heartbreaker," having been raised on the Janis Joplin rendition.)(But I digress.)(Again.)
3. "Highway Road" by Blackfoot, which is probably my favorite of the three.

Whoops, I just thought of another,
4. "On the Road Again," by Willie Nelson, although it's a little light for the mood I'm looking for.

Any others?

Bob's song is so well known. No need to feature it.

Blackfoot's song, a really evocative rock piece with a little country fusion (reminiscent of the Outlaws, if you ask me, which you didn't but I'll say it anyway):

5. And I don't know how I could've missed Colorado's own (transplanted here, but most are), Dan Fogelberg's "Missing You."
6. Not to mention Journey's "Faithfully."
7. And I'm not a huge Kiss fan, but I do like "Beth," and it fits in quite well to the "Lonely Performer" category.

Does seven a genre make?

Gordon Lightfoot? He wrote a few - what exactly do you mean by "lonely performer" - must it be about someone who is sad or missing someone?

Please to define exactly what you mean by "lonely performer."
When a member of a band performs solo?
Beth is one of my favorites. Eighth-grade Danie LOVED Kiss...at one time I had over 1,000 pics/posters of them hanging in my bedroom. Not exaggerating.
Some were hung on the ceiling. Along with Shaun Cassidy. Hey, my tastes varied (still do).
I have the old Kiss albums plus a few CDs. I even have their solo albums, having spent all my teenage money on them in one shot.

The lamp is burning low upon my table top
The snow is softly falling
The air is still in the silence of my room
I hear your voice softly calling

If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter night with you

The smoke is rising in the shadows overhead
My glass is almost empty
I read again between the lines upon each page
The words of love you sent me

I heard this song when I was working at Grace Hospital on night shift by myself. Andy was still back in Scotland and we had only been married about four months. I had not seen him since I said goodbye at the ferry in Ardrossan. It actually makes me feel a bit tearful right now thinking about it.

That's a wonderful song by Lightfoot, Neesy. I wasn't familiar with it. Thank you. When I'm in the mood for a long shower, "Canadian Railway Trilogy" pretty much carries me through start to finish. Yeah, I sing it. You don't want to hear. (And I had to look up "navvies," and it took a while, because I thought he was singing "nallies.")

In my thinking for this thread, "Lonely Performer" mostly - mostly - means the traveler facing the loneliness of the road pursuit of his their craft, leaving loved ones behind, experience the joy (sometimes) and transience of the audience appreciation. But I'm willing to make room for trying to "find the sound" late nights - hence inclusion of "Beth."

Thought of another one:

8. "Dead or Alive" - Bon Jovi.

Dannie - you and I would have been thick as thieves in eighth grade! I was even listening to KISS today on the way home from work - "I Was Made For Loving You" is on my mix CD. But thank goodness - no Shaun Cassidy. He was pretty to look at, and was my first serious crush (or maybe second to Freddie Prinze, or third to Lamont on "Sanford and Son"), but damn, his music was barfalicous.
