Eh, go to your HR department and complain if they want to know why you took a sick day. That is privileged information. Raise a stink so you don't have to lie. Or read your handbook. It should have the code you need to use in there without lying. Just use the code. Something like, "I do not feel well enough to come into work today." Like when you go to an AA meeting, the code to entry is "My name is bob and I have a desire not to drink today." You shouldn't have to get overly personal.

I lie sometimes, I suppose. I'm very Italian about it though, and don't ever say words that will haunt me later. A little like a politician that answers a different question than was asked.

And getting lied to never bothers me much. You learn so much about someone when they lie. You might learn that they use words like a tool, trying to pick a lock, and aren't concerned with how the construction of those words could hurt anyone but themselves.

But then reputation is like fine China. Easily broken, quite difficult to mend. Being able to separate the cracked from the priceless can be quite worth it, to the observer, in sorting out what role others should have in our lives.

If everybody suddenly told the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the literal unvarnished truth , our whole civilization would come crashing down as a result of all the acrimony that that would likely create.

Best line I ever heard: "I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, for amber waves of grain, I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy, Amen" XD

I told a big lie today.

I was off work and did some errands. I went to my neighbors. We hung out their the garden and talked, and I cuddled their adorable dogs.
After that, it became very hot. Everyone left for the day. About 1:00 I lie down on the couch and immediately a cat jumps on me. I said, "I don't want to cuddle a cat. No way."
2 seconds later, I cuddled the cat and we fell asleep in full cuddle position and slept for 3 hours.
Moral of the story: Animals are great BS detectors :)

My motto is, "It doesn't have to be pretty, it just has to be the truth." That's what I expect from people since that's what I give them. Don't white-wash it, don't wrap it up with a bow, just say it.
That's not to say I've never told a lie; I'm sure I have. But it's not my usual practice. I have bad enough issues with my short term memory as it is; to have to remember what BS I told to whom would be damn near impossible for me.

We Lie everyday, if we answer the Question "How are you ?"
We never say "Damn i am so pissed"

....yes I do.
Well let me rephrase. In a professional setting, it's always "I'm good and you?" but with people I know very well, if they ask how I am and I'm irritated I'll tell them and tell them why (for venting purposes only)!

is it a lie if you call in sick to work, but the reason you're sick is that you started doing shots at 9am? i was young, what can i say?

but seriously, i try not to lie, and i think i'm mostly successful, save some random attempts to maybe not blurt out something that would bruise an ego. i've been around a pathological liar or two, and it can be pretty annoying. i don't know how they function when they have to remember what it is they told to whom. but if i know someone is like that, i keep them at a distance as much as possible (some were work mates, and others weren't very swift at picking up what was being put down, so i didn't have a lot of choice in the matter).
