It's great as long as the person keeps it on. My Mother-in-Law kept taking her necklace off and misplacing it. She had two but both would disappear. When she fell, she didn't have one on so she laid on the kitchen floor for at least 20 hours. That led to the hospital and, finally, she was gone.

So, yes, the service is great but it has to be kept up on the other end to be any good.

My mom had this several years ago. I believe they now have a wrist band as well as the pendent. Yes, you must wear the button device 24 /7. The accident will occur as soon as you are not wearing it. Not sure on present costs. I liked that mom could press the button just to confirm the system was active. Also consider the distance it covers. When mom was still driving, it did not cover the walk to the car.

That's actually important. The peace of mind knowing for certain it is actually working right this instant. I remember when 9-1-1 service was new, and one person I knew kept calling it just to be sure it was still hooked up. I only knew one person, but apparently it was a common problem, especially with elderly or people with health problems.

Not that you shouldn't, but what are your reasons for feeling the need for it?

My mom is 89 and hard of hearing, and we keep different hours. She is up for a long time while I am still asleep, and I am awake for a long time after she goes to bed. She has already fallen once in her bedroom--it happened to be late at night while I was still up and she missed getting hurt, thank God. When I fell off the back steps and broke my leg she was in watching a Doris Day movie (ironically entitled Lucky Me,) and didn't hear a damn thing. My neighbors let me in and called 911 before Mom even knew anything was going on. This is actually at least my fourth fall downstairs (not counting once when I fell running upstairs) but the first time I was really hurt, and often I am working alone in places where Mom would never see or hear if I ended up in trouble. I also plan to carry my cell phone in any questionable circumstances, but Mom does not have one.

There was some horrible story about phone service providers not connected to 911 and some poor guy died while his kids were trying to get an emergency call through.

I hope the Life Alert is not to pricey. It sounds like it would give you peace of mind and protection if needed. (I don't know anything about the service personally, but it sounds good.)
