If you want your little rubberkid to "get a black belt" fast, there are schools that specialize in that.

Just pay your monthly fee and they'll get their belts on schedule. Yay! Cake and ice cream after.

If you're a good parent, you will be more selective.

Most "kid martial arts" are nothing more than dance and boredom. However, repetitive kata (even the ridiculous ones) do wire young neurons for a time when they might need them. A little bit of mizu no kokoro doesn't hurt.

The best "martial art" is one that trains you to never need it.

I got the belly roll down. I just have a hard time coordinating my flailing arms while all of that's going on with my hips. So I mostly just stick 'em out to the side and do my thing.
I like yoga, but my balance leaves a lot to be desired.

Tae Kwan Do was great for balance but I'd lost a lot of it after not continuing with even the easier katas. That's one reason why I'm taking yoga now, though, and I have seen an improvement. It's really important as people get older (I'm speaking for myself at least =D) to make sure their balance is good to avoid injuries from being unsteady. Good for you with the belly dancing--it's great fun! My problem with the arms raised so much was that they tire very easily, not to mention still counting to myself when using the cymbals which didn't help with the coordination. Think I'd have to go for the more traditional folk costumes these days than the cabaret style I wore when I was taking the class at age 26.

I wanted to apologize for the post I put out earlier in this thread. I intended to reply to the original poster's question about wondering who it was he had seen post martial arts info about their child. Instead of replying to his question, I just blah-d all over the place like some silly SOB with no manners. I could have sworn I hit reply but obviously I didn't. So, sorry bout that everyone. It was not my intention to just write a paragraph about my son's martial arts exploits and dump it on everyone, I was going to let the original poster know that it may have been one of my posts he was referring to when he started the thread......Oh look, a squirrel!........I get side tracked easily sometimes. Anyway, everyone have a good day, sorry about hijacking the poster's original question.

Belly dancing is low-impact. And don't let the elegant look of it fool you. It's a GRUELING workout. I've given birth three times and I'm still finding muscles I never knew I had.
They brought a troop of belly dancers to one of our company picnics several years ago. It was a huge event, almost like a small carnival. Beautiful belly dancers, free alcohol, and all the guys in my division....all in the same place....someone obviously didn't plan for that combo. We ended up getting a memo from the mayor about our behavior. I really do think the belly dancers were flattered by all the attention though:)

I go more for legging pants with a hip scarf. This belly is NOT something people want to see. Not even thin.

As a matter of fact, the dance interpretation DID involve us smearing tater salad all over ourselves...not really...I think if that would have happened, posting bail for us and counseling for all the witnesses would have been involved....lol
