I'm planning a writing event and thought I'd start off by reading a chapter of On Writing aloud to the group. Someone told me I can't do that without the author's permission. I think that's wrong. I know it's verboten to play an audiobook or show a movie to a group without permission, but reading aloud from a book I purchased? But just in case, I'm asking. Would love the official word from Ms. Mod, or maybe a copyright attorney...

...I thought the same kinda thing...I wasn't taking my kids allowance for reading them bedtime stories...

Uh oh...I really DID charge my kids for reading to them. Am I going to jail now?

Kidding, people, kidding! Put the number for DSS down and back away from the phone!

But seriously...the person who told me this (and I repeat, I think she's wrong) said it doesn't apply to school classes but to public or private non-school gatherings, whether or not fees are charged. Personally, I think she dreamed this up, but I just wanted to make sure! No harm there, right?

I'd think if you bought the book then it's yours to read, either in your mind or out loud

i was going to go to the local barnes & noble tomorrow, pick a book at random and read aloud for anyone who wanted to hear, but i'll have to cancel now.

but on a serious note, i think your friend is maybe stretching the meaning of copyright a tad.

LOL...Do it! Hey, let's all do it! It'll be a movement: The first-ever nationwide Read-In!

That should be fine in that context.

I sure hope so. I sometimes start spouting loooong chunks of dialogue from Creepshow at work just to freak my co-workers out. I can do ya that whole movie, yes I can. I do a pretty good Wilma.

Quote a lotta Byron and Coleridge, too, but those cats are in no position to sue me.
...have I told ya I'm related to Byron Coleridge?....
