Steve owns a couple Mercedes so I'm sure he knows the difference. Having them not be quite right does help with not upsetting Mercedes Benz, though.
I could understand that better if he had made up a Benz model that did not exist. But using a real model seems to defeat that avowed purpose.

A two door car is not capable of killing and injuring all those people standing in line? Is that what this is all about? Or am I missing something else here?

And if he had people would have been telling him there's no such thing as x car and with it being set in a real world setting, it would have "thrown them out of the story" much the same as they're doing now. After 25 years on the job and Steve obviously much longer, we realize that there's a point at which you just can't win. :glare:

I just started this book and he said:

"A big gray sedan, maybe an SL500, the kind with twelve cylinders, and right now all twelve were screaming."
There must be a lot of people with OCD who have to have everything precise and exact in their worlds. Just relax and go with the flow (please!??)
