The robots are how Stephen gets his story ideas. Late at night, they send superbeamlaserspammomaticzazzyprobe waves out and our IP addresses suck the waves down into our devices, then over the course of several hours Stephen uploads our dreams.
He stores them on his iPod mini until he can get them to Marsha for decoding and dictation. Then Voilà! New story...

Of course it's also possible the bots are doing that other thing.... (collecting information in order to make (for example) Google searches easier.)
