I feel your pain, I feel your shame but you are not to blame.

Seriously gutting for you that you missed it, been there myself. However, I guess the words inside haven't changed. I missed a second hand signed copy of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Eventually got one but at a higher price.

I find Blaze too sad, in that the main character was bright to begin with and loved books, but was brain damaged due to severe child abuse. Just too grim a beginning for me...it's kind of like an unrefined Carrie. Just saying...just not my particular cup of tea.

it was my own fault anyway, that one minute of hesitation (am not a fan of the Dark Tower books, but loved this rich edition). Good that it's gone to someone for the story as well as the pics. I love most of King's other works, I am just not a fantasy fan...I don't get the fuss over the Lord of the Rings either...just saying!

You don't like THe Lord of the Rings? That is impossible! You are from New Zealand which means you were automatically in all the films?

Just kidding - I said this once to a guy in a bar in Ponsonby and I barely escaped a thumping.

ha ha. That's Posonby for you...I much prefer Peter Jackson's really imaginative and home-made films such as Meet The Feebles, Braindead and Bad Taste. Full of No 8 wire imagination and know-how and funny as. I love Heavenly Creatures too. LOTR just doesn't do it for me - long hours of exhaustive swashbuckling etc, not memorable. Geoff Murphy (The Quiet Earth etc) recently quoted that Peter Jackson has not really contributed to the NZ film industry (words to that effect) - I agree, though made in NZ, they are not about life in NZ if you get my drift...though Heavenly Creatures is an exception and exceptional. He needs to get out of the sausage-factory of Hollowood!!! moan, moan.

I getcha... I love those gritty early works of Peter's too, they were fantastic. The reason I love the Rings though is that I loved the original story (JRR's) before it was popular.
So, seeing it all come to the screen like that was fantastic for me. Also, I think the films really did showcase our country... that landscape IMO, was classic NZ. But then... I am more of a rural lass, I don't do cities. :biggrin2:

yes, I hear ya, the NZ landscape was beautuifully showcased in LOTR, but it still could have been a landscape anywhere. I love the NZ landscape in such films as Man Alone, Whale Rider, Boy, films that showcase the landscape and the dark NZ psyche, the underbelly, the side not often seen, or in lyrical films such as The Piano, The Quiet Earth, Ngati....Smash Palace. Just saying. Oh, I am gonna get in trouble, lol.!!

I was a fan of Peter Jackson's before LOTR - I actually first saw 'The Frighteners' which I think is an undervalued gem (albeit, set in the U.S but filmed in NZ) and then went back and watched the back catalogue. Heavenly Creatures is amazing.

I do like LOTR though - I loved the books and I think that is about as good an adapatation as is possible from Hollywood. I think there is a different feel about that trilogy though that is very un-hollywood. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about The Hobbit Trilogy which feels like it is all green screen.

Well my favourite NZ film has to be 'The Devil Dared Me To'. Which goes to show how sophisticated my sense of humour is.
