I liked this tale pretty well, but I was little let down by the fact that
all she did was punch a kid--horrible, I know, but not as extreme as King was making it out to be in the build-up

Oh ... I should say she did a good deal more than that.

The incident is merely the catalyst that instigates the larger reaction.

Unless I missed it entirely.

I thought this was more about
the act of corrupting another individual and not so much what he was asking her to do. Tempting her to do something that she knew was wrong. A bit of the old Satan narrative in selling her soul.

This kind of reminded me of the movie indecent proposal.like he was trying to see how far they would go for money and put there morals aside, like used it like an experiment or something. I was like some of the others i wasnt impressed by what he had them do,now if they were to kidnap the child for a certain amount of time or something that would have been a bit more interesting but it was still a decent story.

I enjoyed this story...but I thought she was going to have to do something much more horrible than just hitting a young child....I thought she lost all of her morals after she did her deed and got the money....

Okay, I didn't read all the comments here because I have to go pick up my son and I can't get into the story just yet (didn't want to accidentally get spoiled!), but the intro just blew me away and I'm literally tingling with anticipation! I'm a single mom and my son is only four and already I have sacrificed a lot for myself just to make him happier and more comfortable. It's an absolute honour to do so, and even more so when he gets to University. I just know my baby is going to be a big deal one day and even if he only becomes a janitor, I'll still be happy just for being able to give him a fair shot... I won't elucidate on how far I'd go to ensure that he gets that shot, but he's definitely going to get it... one way or another, lol! Oh, man, wish I could read it now... I'm DYING, here!!!

Okay, Bad Little Kid didn't quite do it for me, which is weird because I thought it would, but Morality was the money story for me. This one just nailed me!
If someone wants to clock my son for cash, I say power to them, I know what it's like to need to bend some rules to eat, but if I catch them they are definitely going to feel like they earned every penny the hard way, lol! When the old guy said 'excellent' he totally reminded me of Mr. Burns, and my favourite line in the book was this: Such grave matters as sin and forgiveness should remain between man and God.
I was raised Methodist too, well AME anyways so maybe that's why I like this guy's writing so much. Okay, end rant soon, promise, just want to add that this story really did it for me. Best so far!

This is the very ecstasy of love,
Whose violent property fordoes itself
And leads the will to desperate undertakings
As oft as any passion under heaven
That does afflict our natures.

This is the way it reads to me. The absurd, random initial act is the catalyst.

But if I can this ... why not do that?

And if I can do that, surely I can do the other thing?

And if I can do the other thing ...
Yeah, thats the way it works. One small step leads to another and before you know it.....

I kept waiting for Nora to get her comeuppance by the end of the story, but it never seemed to really happen. Other than that I enjoyed the story; I just felt like the ending was sort of abrupt and maybe a slightly missed opportunity to slip in a bit of King-style justice.

Oh ... I don't know. I guess it depends on how you view it, but she's got to spend the rest of her life being her. That's uppance of a kind, it seems to me.
I didn't see any reason to believe she wasn't completely happy with her existence at the end of the story. Even her divorce seemed to be of no concern to her whatsoever. Could you call that a certain brand of justice? Sure, I suppose. But I don't see being a horrible person as its own punishment. I guess that's a philosophical issue though, really.

I didn't see what she did as that bad.
I mean, I wouldn't do it, not now. But when I was depressed and thirty-thousand in debt, and not a mother, if someone offered me 200k to punch a toddler, I probably would have thought about it. A lot of people do a lot of things that they never get caught for, and they all have to reckon with the things that they've done in their own way. That's what the story was about, for me. Also, maybe not getting caught can be worse than getting caught and maybe that's why they say that certain serial killers 'wanted to be caught', because when you're caught at least you can apologize and begin to make amends, but if you're never caught, you never get absolution, not from the people you wronged, anyways.
Just my take.
