you'd have to be more specific. the reasons would vary widely depending on who you're talking about. some would be down to bad choices and being in too many flops, some could be because nobody wants to work with them (talent to attitude ratio being too lopsided). some just lose the bug after awhile and want to fade quietly and be "normal"

In Cinema if you fail to deliver at the box office , then you become persona non grata . If your tv star and your shows keep getting axed even if not the fault of the actor , that can end a career . Bad behavior is another factor in career fizzle.

Molly Ringwald- Was a sensation between '84-'86, only to burn out after splitting with Hughes. Spent some time in France, and after returning, has primarily stuck to direct-to-video and television releases. She's returning for the second season of CW's Riverdale, and she signed on for a cameo in a Keanu Reeves movie, so she may be on the verge of a comeback soon.
Andrew Dice Clay- Temporarily popular in the late 80s, but eventually people started getting tired of his shtick and attitude. I do find Adventures of Ford Fairlane to be a guilty pleasure though.
Steven Seagal- Under Siege aside, his ego really got the better of him.
Val Kilmer- Good actor, but hellish to work with. Too much of a risk for big studios, too temperamental.
Jean-Claude Van Damme- Burned out in the mid-to-late 90s due to cocaine, found out he had bipolar disorder. He's made a comfortable niche for himself in direct-to-video action, though.
Pauly Shore- Let's face it, did anyone really like this guy?
Nicolas Cage- Can be good, but seems fixated on bad or bizarre roles.

if we're just naming the ones we think have faded, anyone tried to watch any of the latest adam sandler movies? it's downright painful. his schtick doesn't age well at all. it's the difference between being a lovable and slightly dumb goof (will ferrell) and someone who just acts like a dumbass who never grew up (sandler). i think the netflix deal was because people were getting tired of him, not because he was being innovative. ETA: or honestly it could just be that ferrell and those who are still successful as goofs just have more charisma and better delivery than sandler ever did

Lindsay Lohan- Where do I even begin with this one?
C. Thomas Howell- Like Molly Ringwald, was a rising young actor, but slipped into b-movies and television.
Stephen Collins- Another tragic case of a beloved TV dad revealed to be a child molesting scumbag.
Shia LaBeouf- Known more nowadays for his eccentric behavior than his acting.
Jeffrey Jones- A good actor, but a horrible human being. Plead no contest to child pornography charges.

Robert DeNiro

He can still be great when he wants to be (Being Flynn) but the choices he has been making for movies the past few years are awful. I know that sometimes a script looks good on the page but sucks when you film it but how could he have ever thought Dirty Grandpa was a good idea? Plus, he's not that good at comedy and he seems to be doing a lot of it for some reason.

The answer is simple, Joe: the long green. It's a hard fact of the industry that, when actors (even legendary ones) reach their twilight years, they tend to rest on their laurels.

It also may have to do with building up a substantial amount of money to leave to their family. I can understand that but it's sad to watch DeNiro in some of this dreck.

Mike Myers- Might be on the verge of a return, if the Gong Show revival gig is any indication.
Dana Carvey- Largely seen as a one trick pony for Wayne's World.
Haley Joel Osment- Solely remembered for seeing dead people and playing Forrest Jr.
Michael Cera- Got typecast, hasn't done anything noteworthy in quite some time, unless you count the Lego Batman Movie.
Alicia Silverstone- One hit wonder for Clueless.
Pia Zadora- Only gained stardom because of her sugar daddy.
Elizabeth Berkeley- Showgirls. That is all.
Amanda Bynes- Several run-ins with the law and serious mental health issues devastated her career.
Bo Derek- Known only for her figure and running on the beach in slow motion.
