I wouldn't assume a guy who already has the net worth of a small country is doing anything "For the Money". It could just be that he wanted to write that book and disagrees with your opinion on it. It's not as if there is a Universal agreement that the book is bad, a lot of critics and fans liked it, others didn't. You happen to fall in the latter category, which is fine.
That's exactly my point - he doesn't need to do it for the money, so why start churning out inferior novels, Dean Koontz-style? I would rather wait 3 years for a decent book than getting 2 crap books a year from SK. (Just as an example, not meaning that his last two books were crap.)

After all of this time you choose to write him about how much you hate one of his books? Not about how much joy he's brought you? That's an interesting choice.

Regardless, welcome to the board! It can be fun around here!
I didn't know about this Forum, otherwise I would have posted on here long ago. And my posts state quite clearly how much of a SK fan I am, by default meaning that he has brought me much joy over the years. I eagerly await every new book, but Mr Mercedes was such a disappointment, I just had to state my opinion somewhere. Ideally I wanted to write directly to him, but apparently that is not possible. Looks like by far the majority of opinion on here is in favor of Mr Mercedes, which is very surprising. Maybe everyone is so overawed by SK that you just can't bring yourselves to say anything negative about his work, or otherwise you do not have very high expectations.

What your failing to understand is that your opinion isn't a unanimous verdict. It may be a crap book to you, but to many others it isn't. So who's opinion is more important, yours or all the people who liked it??

Truth of the matter is, all art is subjective. I'm pretty sure there are books you loved that would make me yawn but that doesn't make you right or me wrong. It's just different taste. You can't ever win an argument about the quality of entertainment because there is no definitive answer. It's not a math problem, there is no right answer set in stone.

I haven't read this yet so I can't speak on what side of the argument I fall on. But I do know that if I don't like it, then I just won't like it. It won't be because I think he's desperate to churn out books or did it intentionally to waste my time or had some hair brand scheme to increase his profit margin. It'll just be because the book didn't connect with me. It happens.

No one here is "overawed" with King's work. The members of this board are among the most intelligent folks I know, and they don't mind critiquing King's stuff. We're not blind sheep, thank ya very much.

Me? I LOVED Mr. Mercedes. Loved it. I can't say enough good things about it. But that doesn't mean I'm "overawed" (sorry I just really got mad when you used that term) in any sense of the word. I have high expectations and King simply fulfilled them (for me) with MM Simply put, everyone has different opinions is all. :)

Also, I happen to think Koontz is a very talented author, and I'd rank him pretty darn close to SK.

I've seen a couple of your posts and I hope you stick around, one King fan to another. Just don't insult us.

Hi, I'm John Adam and I'm new here. I was looking for a way to write to Mr King, and it seems like this Forum is the closest I'll be able to get. I am a BIG SK fan, I've read every book and every short story you've ever written (except for the non-fictional stuff), some books 2 to 3 times. You are by far my no.1 author. However, I just want to say that Mr Mercedes is the absolute worst book you ever wrote! Reading this drivel (Mr Mercedes) I asked myself frequently whether this is really SK, or someone pretending to be you? VERY disappointed, I expect much better from you, Mr King!
Sorry to hear you did not like it. (You cannot please all of the people all of the time, as my dear old Mom used to say!)
Welcome to the SKMB and stick around - it is a great forum for those who are fans of Mr. King's work

Actually, if you check out the forum you'll see a lot of people aren't just "overawed," and I'm not sure your approach is gathering you any support.

Did you not read my earlier post????? I freakin' said I really don't like The Stand (which everyone is supposed to LOVE)! I am far from "overawed." I am a fan, I like most of his books, certainly not all. For the record, I could not stand Dr. Sleep.

...oh now come on!....I am "overawed" by the chutzpah it takes to roll in here as a Noob, and proceed to demolish not only us, but King as well....I need to find this feller, coz I'm sure to be rich when I do-since everything he doth touch, turneth into gold....and his farts smell like raspberry sherbert...

I've worked for Stephen for going on 26 years now. I can assure you he does not churn out novels--terrific or inferior--just for the money. Mr. Mercedes was one he knew might not appeal to all his fans but wrote it because he believed in it and the characters spoke to him as they have to many of his fans. You're just not one of them. Even the regular posters here do not always agree on a book as being one of his better ones but they have the ability to separate personal tastes from writing quality. And further, in some cases they have admitted that a first reading of a novel was not to their liking but upon a reread sometimes years later because they were in a different space in their own lives they changed their opinion. I'll admit that Joyland and Lisey's Story aren't particularly high on my list of favorites and I don't really "get" why so many others found them appealing but I know that has everything to do with me and not the book itself.

I'll PM you our office address so that you can vent your feelings to Stephen. Since he stopped reading and responding to fan mail back in the 80s so he could devote more time to his writing, I will tell you chances of a response are slim to none.

Ditto that!!
That's why she's had that job for 26 years!
Yes, yes, yes, yes... but....
...if I had known all those years ago that all it would take for me to be passed over Steve's desk [DON'T GO THERE] in the form of some personal correspondence, was to waltz in here and trash talk (mostly kidding... we're all definitely entitled to hate on his books) his work....

"Steve, you suck, my dog could write better than you... and she's just a b1tch."
"Steve, (may I call you that?) what the hell were you thinking? Glocks don't have safeties... I come from a land Down Under--and even we know that! (Okay... I really didn't..)
"Steve, New Zealand is NOT a God Awful Place.. it's the people, that suck... get yer facts straight."

Marsha? (Moderator) Please would you forward Stephen my correspondence and let him know that he can call my people when he's ready to make amends.
