Hi everyone!

I'm in the midst of reading Mr. Mercedes and I'm wondering. Stephen put a halt to Rage, afraid there would be copycats. I wonder why he didn't feel the same way with Mr. Mercedes.

I'm thinking maybe because Mr Mercedes is more obviously a work of fiction. I wasn't all that disturbed by Mr Mercedes and don't laugh but Tom and Jerry cartoons disturbed me when I was young :(

It's a fair question. I think it's probably a matter of two things: subject and timing. Subject, because Rage was about kids and had already been implicated in the Columbine shootings. No one wants to be sued--as I've said before, lawsuits are not fun for the whole family. Second is timing. When that whole hullaballoo occurred, Columbine was the most horrible thing most people had virtually witnessed (through the media) in real time. Now...well, the genie is out of the bottle, so to speak. We've had so very many atrocities of various kinds happen, "LIVE ON CNN" (or whoever), that idiots in suits on TV have pretty much given up on blaming songs, books, or movies. Now they blame video games :hammer:

Welcome to the board.
