Nice that you got to take a piece of it home with you, Scott. Been a few years, but one summer I returned to the U.P. and at some point they decided to take the stack down by the old Ahmeek Mill...lived in Tamarack Mills and the mill was named after the mine it serviced. They had already taken the railroad tracks, the trestles, four of them within a short walk of home, and now they were taking the stack. The stack stood just to the right of that mill in the photo.

You can't see it very well, but off to the left in each photo is a slag pile and hill where the trestle connected with the tracks that went elsewhere and that's where are bunch of us were setting, watching the demolition crew cut re-bar. There's houses close to the stack and everyone was wondering if it would fall...like a tree...in the direction they intended. Time passed. Eventually, the stack began to fall, but not before some young boy complained 'when are they going to do it!' Heh! Young kid, and he's making memories, he's getting a kick out of this stack-falling, while I'm lamenting the icons of my youth are disappearing. So I imagine there's a younger one or two who were out and about and will remember the day for other reasons. Life goes on. (They're building houses out there on the gray taillings they dropped in the lake...taillings that used to blow like a desert sand storm toward town now and again.) When the stack hit the ground we felt the vibrations on the hill for a second or more.

...again....I thank you ALL so much for your kindnesses....it was a seminal moment in my life, and believe me-all the tall jokes got dumped on me....plus, the Tower parallel was not lost on me, I only missed hearing the rose sing....interview wise-those have been taken down from the site I believe, but if someone can explain to me how to upload a burned CD of them-I could do that.....love you all, and your thoughts are near to my heart.....
