I am an English person and I do not understand this one little bit. Is it something to do with the Road Runner, and who is that lady?
"Beep beep" is what one of the kids (help me out here someone... is it Richie?) says a lot in the novel, and he takes the phrase with him when he is older. Usually to accentuate a joke. I think!

I plead senescence - it's been a long time since I read It.

Wow - senescence - that word should go in the Word of the Day thread. I am quite impressed with your vocabulary even if you did not know who Richie from It was!
By the way, I must confess I did not know what that word means and now that I do, I think both you and I are suffering from this!  :biglove:

for the record, sai neil, to your original muse upon the ending of this otherwise great book ?

i felt the exact same way as you

but, then again...i've often maintained that quite a few of his books to have endings that are...shall we say...specious

Under The Dome anyone....

also for the record (since it's been brought up on occasion)...i grew up reading lovecraft, bloch, manly wade wellman....etc. etc...IF that's what he was aiming for...i know i didn't feel it was quite so accomplished a feat...

heck...with all the lovecraftian stuff around (not to mention your own rather infamous Dr. Quatermass lurking) as guides...i always felt it could've been better handled from one as accomplished a sia king...

Annoying to me when people refer to IT as a spider, cosmic or otherwise.. Makes me wonder if they actually read the book or just saw the movie. It manifested itself in the minds of the kids as a spider or something close to it as that was all their minds would accept without driving them crazy.. It was physical as they were allowed to smash it's heart, but dismissing IT as a spider is a gross oversimplification and misses the true point of the creature's mental being..

whoa, there...pardners...since the manifestational ability was core to the book, not just the end...why would you assume such a thing ??

nearly everybody 'bought' it throughout the book...almost all who've commented aim their thoughts at...ta da...just the end !!

isn't it possible that, for some readers, king might not've pulled off that ultimate connection within the ending of this book...not been as successful at conveying certain ideas...and that some are reacting, not to a movie, but a (once again) slightly jumbled book ending ??

i know i 'got' it.... all throughout the book...but the ending left me shaking my head...just a little...

It's also possible that some of us may refer to it as a cosmic spider with a mildly sardonic smile on our lips, wilfully ignoring the metaphysical aspects in favour of the - I'll say it again - lame "physical manifestation".

right !

...'cosmic spider' is also a nice, easy way to picture something that's supposed to be scary, even if it isn't...

for some...it might add a little piquancy: "oh my god !! a giant spider !!"..see ?? that could easily be both cosmic and scary !!'

as compared to.... ' oh, look...yet another in a long line of metaphysical manifestations of our fears...i am frightened, indeed !"

...i don't think i'm getting the hang of this 'sardonic' stuff, no...must be a british thing

Two eyes + two ears + one mouth.

The ratio should create an obvious solution to the equation, with perfection of simplicity.

= Be cool.

Also, my Mommycat just had another four mewlings. And they all seem like re-dos of her first three, so I need to start coming up with new names...or not. Maybe just "Stripe 2" and "Nose 2," etc..

Okay, well if the ending wasn't jazzed up enough, perhaps the critics should write their own books..maybe a giant clown,or werewolf,or whatever makes them happy..just don't understand that people can't get that It was their deepest, darkest fear, and the end was what the kids could view without going crazy..I suppose the critics could do better..nope probably not,or this would be their message board..:glare:

The first 3/4 of IT is probably one of the best things Ive ever read. SK is THE greatest at creating believable characters and making us feel like we actually know them. But I also felt like the ending was disappointing, like someone said above, any ending would've been a disappointment. Maybe once i get a chance to re-read Ill feel differently.

ps. I don't think anybody needs to prove their importance in order to give their opinion

I understand what you mean Gavin..the ending works for me, I just don't understand what more people want from this book..you cannot make everyone happy or make every ending perfect..doesn't work that way, that everyone is happy with every ending..so what is the point of complaining about the end..

cats, bryan ???

...all my cats are gray....

but...if you name one 'stripe' ??

...don't feed 'em after midnight...and never let 'em near water....

wow, mjs...don't think i'm complaining...don't really think neil was either...both of us seemed to like/love the book quite a bit

i know i thought i was just offering an opinion...attempting to discuss things...over one bit i found...lacking...

which...and 'correct' me if i'm wrong on this...was the point of neil initial post to begin with...

obviously, if we don't all agree with the 'new' prevailing wind of the moment about every aspect of every book......then we must be critics who need to be, as some bartender once said...corrected !!

thanks for setting us straight...i'll try to be a better little comrade and stand in line more quietly....

Sorry again, didn't mean to use the word complain.."discuss" I guess..just a quick addition, the creature,or the ending, really wasn't what drew me in,it was SK's description of being a kid,and friendship, and how fleeting or how lasting it can be.I personally loved the end,as it falls away from such friendships, just like life, and all that is left are those we really love..guess I am too sentimental, but I looked on this book not so much as a horror story, but as an ode to our childhood, our friends, our parents and the past..as you can see,my copy is a little careworn..once again, sorry if I offended anyone by being a little strident here... :)

If it's any cosolation to the original posting, which is highly doubtful, I agree that the denouement was disappointment in the respect mentioned, but it was outdone by the TV miniseries version, which to my jaded memory seemed like
a crude model of a daddy longlegs, and about as terrifying

I had some other issues with It. Between it and Cujo, two of my least favorite SK books. I probably can't discuss them, though, because I never revisited them, and they're faded in the now-senescent (great word, thanks!) memory.
