My name is Jacqui and I am from West Bloomfield, Michigan. I am a Literary Garden Ambassador working with the English department at West Bloomfield High School along with English teacher Jennifer McQuilan. Jennifer has created an award winning literary garden in our high school's courtyard and it is the first of its kind in the country!

I was wondering if anyone might be able to direct us to a contact to see if we might be able to procure a plant, cutting, or seeds that we could add to our garden from the Mr. King. I will be in Maine in May to pick up a donation from the home of Sir Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and would love to add Mr. King to our list of authors highlighted in out garden.

We are currently working with homesteads, libraries, families and historical groups from the following authors: Kurt Vonnegut, Walt Whitman, Nathaniel Hawthorn, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ken Kessey, Mark Twain, Harriett Beecher Stowe, Alice Walker and Ralph Waldo Emerson to name just a few. You are certainly invited to check out our blog: Walden at West Bloomfield - Creating a Literary Garden

If anyone could possibly give us any direction to contact Mr. King or one of his affiliates your help would be appreciated.

Just to be clear, you would like to have something from his garden to add to yours and you would like to do that in May? I could check for you but want to make sure I'm asking the right question.

Yes! That is correct, any plant that he feels he would like to donate from his property or grounds that kids could continue to cultivate in their literary garden at school. Here is some info on the project:

Spring comes late for us so I'm not sure what, if anything, would be available in May but I will ask if the Kings would be willing to contribute something.

Thank you. Yes, it would be late in May as that exactly what the Garden Association with the Longfellow house said for timeframe. We appreciate you reaching out on our behalf. We would love to have him represented in our garden.

First thought that comes to mind would be corn: i.e. his story "Children of the Corn"

But since he also has a house in Florida - maybe a native plant from there, rather than Maine?

Maine or Florida would be great. The garden has many different plants from around the US but since we are in Michigan our garden zone is similar to Maine.

Mr King is a favorite author of so many teachers and students that any contribution would be amazing! (And how amazing would corn be? Lol)

Frannie's father loved his garden in 'The Stand'. I can't remember all that he grew, just loved tending to it. And good long talks, while doing garden work.

Also, it seems that an awful lot of his characters are into canning the vegs. But mostly in a scary root cellar.

Canning might be another option for after?

Don't know if this helps but he did write a serialized novel called "The Plant" that was never finished (sort of an experiment)

There are some rose species that are quite hardy and specifically cultivated for more harsh climates like you would get in Maine or Michigan

I am in Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada) and I have seen people here grow roses but of course you have to protect them during our harsh winters - good luck!
