The Giver by Lois Lowry is excellent as a standalone book and as part of a 4-book series. I read this back in elementary school and LOVED it. I recently revisited it as an adult and learned Lowry wrote another 3 books to complete a quartet. I thought they were all pretty good, but the first is the strongest. The last one was excellent as well.

Wow...elementary school?.. My son is reading this now for English. He likes it but hasn't finished it. I have mixed emotions about this story.

Most of my friends' favorite author at the moment is John Green. Talented, talented guy. Great novels with a quirky sense of humor.
