So...I have to know, is anyone truly my kind of obscure nerd? Totally stoked for the Fifty Shades Of Grey movie. Loved the book. Tell me I'm not alone!
Nerds are cool :cheerful: - but I am afraid that Fifty Shades of Grey got quite a few bad reviews here and was the butt of many jokes and memes.

It was pretty salacious. Apparently it sold something like 10 million copies, but that does not make it good literature.

If you enjoyed it, that's great! To be honest I actually did buy the first copy, but that was in 2012 I think (before I joined this message board). (and my husband was up North) - sorry - TMI? :a11:

Here's an excerpt from an on-line review (I did not write this):

The problem is that ever since I read James’s first novel, I’ve been troubled. Is anyone else out there wondering what I am: Do middle-aged women, the main audience for this book, really view the threat of violence as an aphrodisiac? And isn’t it dangerous to turn a BDSM-addict into a romantic hero? Would we want our daughters dating Christian Grey?

It’s true that the physical pain Anastasia endures in the books is by her own consent, so much so that before he spanks her for the first time Grey hands her a contract. Will she agree to being tied up, to being whipped, to being caned? And those other possibilities, including the use of clamps in places we won’t discuss. You get the picture. This is presented as a negotiation, and Ana exercises her prerogatives, crossing out some activities she deems as nonnegotiable. One of the questions on the contract: “How much pain is the Submissive (Ana) willing to experience?” This is to be judged on a scale from one to five.

There are two assumptions running through that first book. One is that Grey’s obsession with violence isn’t really his fault. He’s a man flawed by his past, someone who has been abused as a child who has latched onto BDSM as a way to channel his confusion and anger. The second is that Ana, a virgin until she meets Grey, will find a way to change him.

A disclaimer: I didn’t read the second or third books. I didn’t want to. But I’m told by friends who did that by the end of the trilogy bad boy Grey is saved by the love of a good woman, and Ana is rewarded for enduring the turmoil and physical pain inflicted upon her with a life of luxury with the reformed man of her dreams. Sounds like a fairy tale. Of course, it is.

What about Stephen King? Have you read many of his books? There is also a thread called "What are you Reading" that you might find interesting :tickled_pink::)

I think freak, or crazy...or weird for added to my nerd status in class the other day... Lab topic was patient positioning, which included applying and securing restraints. Adding up all my posts on the thread song game it's easy to tell my song palate is...diverse... it's also random and perpetua--trust me. The whole time my clinical director is demonstrating with the worst cuffs "Tie your mother down" is playing in my head. I had to ask if anyone else was singing it and every one, instructor included, stopped and stared at me. No one had even heard of the song! WT»¥®*??

...and good luck ever getting an order for restraints unless you get into Mental Health...around here, MD's are very reluctant to order them for fear of being sued, even when the family is begging them to do it-so their family member doesn't harm themselves....at least being a Correctional Nurse as I am, restraints like cuffs and leg irons are expected...

I'm studying respiratory therapy so my boyfriend was just like "why in the hell will you need to learn to restrain someone?" My favorite Anatomy professor was a corrections nurse before he came to Kent. He never really got into any stories, but I'm sure they were there.

...indeed. there are...it's just that most folks would think I was making them up....and though it's an honest question from your boyfriend-there would be times, on confused and or dementia patients when soft wrist restraints would be welcome, while you try to give them their treatments without worry of the masks or cannulas being repeatedly pulled off....

Never been there myself but I can only imagine the panic and distress involved in someone who is freaking out and needs to be restrained - I think as a prison nurse you definitely have the proper body habitus for that job! :O_O::kiss::thumbs_up:

You know what? I no longer work in the PsycHealth Department of HSC, having moved over to the Medical Records Department in the main hospital.

My stress level has gone down dramatically - moving away from that place is a 100% improvement for me. (Should have gotten out of there 2 or 3 years ago!)

p.s. I did not work in Security or have direct patient contact - it was just a very noisy atmosphere with lots of distractions - I could not concentrate on doing my job and the noise level was so bad it was difficult to transcribe the dictations.

...I attempt to be very aware of where I am in relation to inmates, and paths of exit or defense if needed-however when responding to an injury or incident in a dorm, it's problematic because there are 250 inmates to a floor in the housing unit and only two of us, the regular 2 dorm C.O.'s and maybe a yard dog(which is what I call the Officers who work the yard) or two...I always keep my fingers crossed that all don't decide to go off at once-because, we're dead in that case...in the Infirmary, I watch out for my team very carefully...and normally if there has been trouble-the inmates are cuffed...

My son and his fiancee actually went to see that one  a few days ago! :icon_eek:

Of course they are in their 20s and will watch just about anything :tounge::smile::) (for them it's just a night out and they are not all that discriminating)

Have you read any reviews on the movie yet?

Kudos to you Scott - they don't pay you enough - you should get danger pay (seriously)!

My dad was one of these people who reacted very badly to medicine. His appendix ruptured when I was a baby and he was in the hospital for a month. (nowadays they would send them home in an hour!) But, some medicine they used on him, he became very active and mean. And my dad was the sweetest man I have ever met. They had to restrain him. The doctor asked my mother if he always acted like that and my mom said, "I don't know who that guy is!" lol!

Also, when he had his final heart attack, he was in ICU heavily drugged and ripped out the lines that were IN his heart. I'm sure it contributed to his death.

...it's why I am a proponent of restraints, AND proper monitoring of same....any number of things can cause someone is as normally as placid and sweet as your Dad, to become a complete in utter whackjob in very little time...

When my siblings and I go to doctors that want to do any procedures that include pain killers, anesthesia or relaxants especially, we always tell me about our dad as we don't know if we might have the same bad reactions. A family link or just an individual thing?

Yes, my dad was so gentle. And so kind! I guess he ripped the curtains off the wall at one point and had a nurse crying!
