Hey Everybody,

I've been reading King for years, but am brand spanking new to the board. Look forward to discussing his novels and hanging out with other fans.

Speaking of, I got a question. I remember this really vivid scene he wrote but can't remember the book / story it appeared in. Maybe you all can help?

A character is either going crazy or (having a heart attack maybe?) and it starts raining refrigerators and ovens all kinds of appliances and other crazy shiz.

It was super scary but also awesome and incredibly well done and I was wondering if any of you remember what I'm talking about and can point me in the right direction. Book would be great. Story / scene / page number would be freaking amazing.

Oh and it was from an older work, I think. I want to say Hearts in Atlantis, but that might not be right, so don't let me throw you off your game.

Anyway, did not intend for my post to be this long. Next one will be super short, I promise. And if I don't hear from anybody, hope you all have a great Thanksgiving next week and I'll look forward to chatting after Turkey Day.

Peace!

I'm remembering a little more. I think the guy is driving down a street, maybe a highway, but it's all congested with traffic. And he stops, steps out of the car and he's weaving between other vehicles, when all the crazy kitchen appliances and everything start raining down from above. A toaster--I think that's first--maybe an oven and then refrigerator.

Anyway, thanks for thinking it through. I'd kinda love to find that scene if it rings bells with someone. Thanks!

I remember the story, just not the title nor the author. Maybe not sK; maybe Roald Dahl?

Oh, yeah, Flake Noir, I didn't think about that... I thought this book was older, before 11/22/63, but maybe I'm wrong. Blunthead, I'm pretty sure it was SK, almost positive, but, again, this is something I read awhile ago, so you never know :)

You're correct, I do never know. I hope we can remember about this story.

Holy crap, I found it. It's in the last story of Hearts in Atlantis, titled "Why We're in Vietnam." Starts up around page 628 of my book. Incredible scene... Anyway, thanks for your interest blunt head and Flake Noir!

I loved Hearts in Atlantis, but can't remember this scene at all, maybe I will re-read after I finish Rose Madder.

Why We're in Vietnam
Why We're in Vietnam describes a reunion of two veterans - John Sullivan, Bobby Garfield's childhood friend, and a former Army officer named Diefenbaker, who is still thought of as "the new lieutenant" - at the funeral of a third. Sully-John has become a car salesman, and apparently is good at his job.
As the two men find a reprieve from the funeral music, they share their thoughts about what veterans of Vietnam have in common, but also revisit an incident in Dong Ha province that almost escalated into a
My Lai Massacre initiated by Ronnie Malenfant, a former student and player in the Hearts game in Hearts in Atlantis. Earlier in the day, two helicopters had crashed and Sully-John, Diefenbaker, Malenfant, and Willie Shearman as well other members of their squad Delta Lightning ran to the wrecks under enemy fire to rescue the badly burned pilots. The stress of the incident had built until they had reached a village in Dong Ha, where Malenfant vowed to kill everyone in the village as a message to the enemy. When an old lady accosted him, Malenfant threw her to the ground and started stabbing her with his bayonet. Deifenbacker, now in charge after the commanding officer was killed at the helicopter rescue, nods to another soldier named Slocum, who shoots a soldier near Malenfant to stop the impending massacre.
Later in the day, Sullivan is gravely wounded and airlifted out of the combat zone after Willie carried him to the medical helicopter. It is then that he hallucinates seeing the old lady "old
Vietnamese woman, 'mama-san'" sitting in the chopper with him, and she continues to show up from that point forward. In the beginning, he dreads seeing her, but as time goes on he becomes relaxed and even pleased to see her, like an old friend.
Diefenbaker begins to share his deep-seated beliefs that their entire generation failed in Vietnam and in the years that followed, that their generation prefers to observe rather than act. Sullivan, unsettled by the prospect of listening to him illustrate this concept in greater detail, opts out of dinner with Diefenbaker and his girlfriend and chooses to drive home.
During the drive home, he discovers the mama-san is with him, and he enthusiastically shares the events of the day with her until he is caught in a traffic jam. He exits the vehicle to smoke, then sees a woman who, at first glance, looks like Carol. When he approaches her, he realizes she is not Carol...and it is shortly after that moment that things start falling out of the sky, beginning with a kitschy lampshade and swiftly escalating to other objects of consumer goods: cordless phones, a grand piano, appliances and a long yellow coat like the "low men" wear. He is struck by one more object, and picks it up to discover it is Bobby Garfield's Alvin Dark glove.
He tries to make it back to his car, and suddenly sees Mama-san, glowing brightly, and she speaks for the first time, saying she will keep him safe. He abruptly finds himself back in his car, with no sign of the fall of objects, but the glove is still there, and he fades while inhaling the smell of summer from the glove.
Diefenbacker reads about John Sullivan the next morning in the New York Post.
The title is a reference to
Norman Mailer's Why Are We in Vietnam? (1967), a novel about a hunting trip to Alaska narrated by a young man about to go fight in Vietnam
