hi all. man im glad and wish I would have started reading sk sooner. read my first king book of 11/22/63 really bc im a kennedy fanatic. wow I was blown away. since then I have read mr. Mercedes/ revival/ blockade billy/ full dark no stars/ the long walk/ tommyknockers( the 1st part was superb but part 2 and 3 kinda not) and needful things. right now reading the stand and have some questions but I will ask just one. on page 133 there is a mention of Madonna. but from what I know this is the uncut version and written in 1978. pretty sure she wasn't around till like 86 or so. what gives. glad to be part of the forum and cant wait to get to know you guys and gals.

Hi again, chief...found it. At the end of Chapter 17 'bout a half page back, page 126 in my uncut paperback version. "On the radio Larry Underwood had been replaced by Madonna. Madonna was asserting that she was a material girl." That Madonna, she does get around, hey? Call it license poetic. King does have a spooky kind of precognition...there's a line later on...something about the Supreme Court making a landmark gay rights decision. They say he is writing a new story...but naw, he's used that rabbit hole they got up in Maine...the one that comes out in the...umm, porta potty? of the future? Probably something to do with when the uncut but still bleeding version of The Stand was released?

Welcome to the boards :) The uncut version of The Stand (1990) was released after the cut version (1978). I think SK sometimes updates cultural references on re-releases. I don't remember which collection of stories (Nightmares ans Dreamscapes?) SK updated before a later printing but he changed some song titles and stuff within some of the stories to make the stories more modern so maybe that's what he did with The Stand. I'm just guessing here... I'd check my copy but I can't find it :(

I think she was about 20 in 1978 so still pretty much not well known - it has to be a later update once the uncut version came out.

The original 1978 version was cut down b/c his publishers made him; he didn't have the clout to publish whatever he wanted in those days. In 1990, circumstances had changed and he wanted to restore characters and back story that were cut. In the process, he ALSO updated cultural references AND (I've never noticed this discussed) made many of those little authorial tweaks such as one would make between a 3rd and 4th draft. For example, changing the wording of a sentence for no real reason except that you like it better that way. I admit, I only have compared spots early on, and I have wondered if those kinds of changes continued throughout or not. Regardless, I am no super collector like some here, but I do have both versions just for "reference."

Incidentally, the 1990 version is NOT exactly what he presented to the publishers in 1978; he said some of what was cut, deserved to be cut. THAT'S the version I'd like to see!

I have it in my head that in the 1978 version, one of Frannie's "things to remember" in her diary is Burma Shave signs. I will have to pull it out and check, unless anyone remembers for me?

Yea I agree. It's hard to imagine reading the stand in 1978 and never have gotten to know the maniac who called himself the kid. Some big sexual borderline stuff for 1978. Maybe that's why he cut it
