As if public speaking in a small community college isn't bad enough, I had to up the fright levels in my final speech to the class:

"I'd like to tell you all about an author I'm fond of. He's from up North somewhere and has had many best selling novels."

My classmates listened curiously...

"His horrifying tales sometimes feature ghosts. Not at all for the faint of heart! Some report nightmares after reading them. Nightmares and other unpleasant emotions..."

The class leaned in for the reveal...

"His name, ladies and gentlemen, is... Nicholas Sparks."

Who else, right?

I got a big laugh and a good grade.

Well, this was a few years back when Sparks had a popular movie out. "Safe Haven", I believe.

...in fairness to him, I like a good romance when I'm in the mood and didn't mean any harm in using him as a comedic device. He's the Stephen King of love stories. Many of his novels are set in the Tidewater region of North Carolina. I'm a native and Sparks is an interloper, so I hope to one-up him some day.

Thanks for the explanation

My first instinct was to answer "Who's Nicolas Sparks?" :hmm:
