The fact that we don't experience more gun violence in this country really amazes me, considering how many legal and illegal weapons are floating around everywhere. I recently got kicked off a jury panel because I support gun control and the defense thought I would be biased. The nature of the defendent's purported crime just confirmed my belief that gun violence can erupt any where, any place, and at a moment's notice. A young man, just paroled from prison, was found on high-school grounds (during school hours) with a loaded glock.

I have never in my life carried a firearm on my presence in public, open or concealed, and hope to never have to. But if the time ever came where I felt the need... for protection purposes, I want to know my rights are legally protected to do so.

You shouldn't be able to legislate because of individual stupidity or incompetence, which is what has been being attempted in some cases, which provides no justification for the prohibition or added regulations for law-abiding people such as myself.

Well perhaps then you will exceed my time there, but it'll take you a good 7-10 years. I was really referring, as I said, to the rural areas in northern, northeastern and northwestern Texas. A lot fo the recent exhibitions of open carry have been in these areas. I would leave Dallas out of these stats as it is a huge city metroplex. Central and South is often more latino than white. The border towns.... I can't say I wouldn't open carry myself. They can be VERY dangerous.

Damn, you were honest about your bias. Bravo, sir.

That was said tongue-in-cheek. The 'winky eye' should have given that away. :)

I agree, and really do attempt not to do this myself. But, like any political argument, if you take a side and support a concept, you support EVERYTHING that goes with it, including the idiots. You can't give a 57% vote to one side and 30% to this camp and the rest another. So, even against your will, if you say hands off guns, or are very pro-NRA, etc., you are standing with the idiots who do these dumb things. I don;t mean to say you support THEM personally, but the things they ascribe to, you are supporting. This is true for anything, not just guns, and goes all ways.

Or it can be someone having a bit of fun with a misconstrued characterization or biased perception. No back-peddling needed. :)

I hear ya. I said earlier in this that if it gets to the point you NEED to, things have broken down to the point I doubt anyone is going to be enforcing any open carry laws, whether they exist or not. The problem is these nutjobs' version of what is a NEED to is completely fallacious paranoia.

Sure, but isn't individual stupidity, greed, immorality, etc, why we have laws in the first place? Ya know, one bad apple and all that. Fences keep honest people honest, right? If you don't ascribe to this, you'll be the first in several thousand conservatives I've met in my life that doesn't. It's a bedrock principle to every one I've known. Perhaps shockingly, I believe this is true myself. It's only logical if you think about it.

You're gonna trip and hit your head if you don't stop. Happened to guy I knew in HS. He hit the back of his head on a sink and was in a wheelchair afterwards. Poor guy. So, really, stop all this before someone gets hurt. :p

There might be a grain of truth there. It seems simplistic to deny shades of meaning or support (for example, I'd have no problem if they removed guns from the public venue, aside from trained personnel; given our national history, I'm willing to settle for more and deeper background checks--including for rifles--and restriction of ammunition. I don't think that makes me a supporter of the extremes of any side; it makes me a pragmatic realist.) but that's politics. Maybe that's why I don't identify with either Republicans or Democrats; those that claim either side are usually lumped with the extremes of either party, and none of that business encompasses my own reasoning.

I think you might change your tune on that if you would have accompanied me to the section of Philadelphia I had to visit yesterday. All I can say is thank god I escaped before the sun went down. Several young men in wheelchairs in the gang mix. And I doubt it was because of a sink or legal handguns.

Cities can always be dangerous. Have you been to Miami? I'd put it up there with anywhere. But can we really judge these gang-bangers for intimidating others with their shows of force? After all, many of them are just exercising their right to open carry... :)

Yeah I’ve been to Miami numerous times. I have to agree with you. Once I was watching the local news and there was a live scene of a police standoff taking place with a gunman. I thought “wait that looks familiar.” I looked out the window in my hotel and didn’t need to watch the event on TV anymore. Another time I was down helping out after Hurricane Andrew. The only hotel they could find me was in a hotel half destroyed by the hurricane. I believe I was on the 10th floor. We took the elevator down and it gave loose about 3 floors down and dropped several more before coming to a loud screeching halt. I called on the emergency phone to have someone get the elevator moving in order to save me from the screaming girl I was on the elevator with. After we got out we found our rented car was broken into. (loved the sights on the beach though :))

And Philadelphia doesn’t allow open carry. Hell, I even had to dismantle the stun gun I keep in the car before entering city limits as the city prohibits them too. I think the only guns they turn a blind eye to are illegal ones. ;)

True. I should've clarified I meant gangster types in general. Isn't their rationale for showing off guns the same as anyone else's? "Look at me, I have one so don't mess with me"? Granted one may be a lawful show versus a criminal show, but the intent is the same: make others cautious of you via intimidation of the show of deadly force. For that matter, isn't this (besides obviously quicker access) one reason why cops open carry?

Since then, Miami has become even more of a sh!thole.

I'm not sure if it's a blind eye unless they assign a cop to every person in the city. Beyond that, they probably just can't effectively and realistically police this type of thing.

Makes one wonder why the cops don't get the guns off them congregated in their group... we all know they're there and on them.

I am not sure what you mean... You mean why don't the cops search the gangsters and confiscate them? If they are open carrying and a cop sees it, I am pretty sure they will do something about it. Beyond that, 4th amendment, man. Can't just randomly search people on a hunch. That has been beat to death in the SCOTUS. They have to have more than a hunch to search people, but you also expect less "security of your person" when out in public, is what the clarification has generally been.
