I recently grabbed a 1st Edition of Desperation and for the most part it is a beautiful and well kept copy. But as you can see from the photos, once again I am faced with a dreaded spine issue. I have tried a method that I read online about running your finger along the gutter from page to page, front and back to center. No such luck in this case. As you can see in the photos, there is a slight lean.

Any ideas?

Buy a better copy. Hell, the book ain't THAT old. It ain't like some autographed first edition of Salems Lot or nothing.

Over the years I've read in articles that the best way to get rid of a leaning spine is to open the book starting at the last page and go from back to front, opening every single page till you get to the front. I have tried this on a couple of titles and, while it never totally got rid of the lean, it did improve the look of the book and diminished the lean.

Well, if I could find and AFFORD perfect 1st Editions of every SK book, do you think I would be asking people how to repair this one?
Lots of members here (myself included) like to peruse used bookstores and thrift stores for King titles. You would be amazed at what you'll find. I have found many rare King (and other authors) titles at these places. I even found an unread beautiful 1st printing hardback of Insomnia that was autographed by Steve at a Goodwill and paid all of $1.99 for it.

Yeah, but, Desperation ain't that old, is all I'm saying. Even a mint copy can't be worth that much.

No I understand your point. But as you must know, on eBay or anywhere else online, you are taking a risk with any of these used books. Not like you are walking into a store and grabbing a retail copy that is truly mint. No one selling used books is taking pictures and saying "Hey this one is perfect - except the slight lean in the spine." They take pictures to make the book look as good as possible. So you roll the dice and hope for the best. And usually the cost of return is on you. So can I get another copy and roll the dice again? Sure. But if there was a simple fix since it isn't a broken spine, it made sense for me to ask others that might have had experience with this.

Wow! That's awesome! Congrats on the great find. Unfortunately where I am living now, not much around. So online is pretty much my only option.

Oh, I dig. I'm a long time comic dealer/collector, I hope you can imagine imagine my frustration in such areas. "What? Fantastic Four #4? I dunno. Lot of wear on the spine. I'll give ya ten bucks." It aint fair.

Yeah, it has been a struggle for me to get Really good 1st editions on eBay and even Abes. I have definitely gotten some great deals, and am really happy with my collection. But I have had some bummers too. Even had some jerk sell me a BCE that they claimed was a First Edition. I generally think a lot of people don't intentionally try to be dishonest. The categories that this stuff falls into is usually pretty subjective. In this case, the DJ is mint. Not a scratch. The pages are clean, no markings, etc. The seller didn't list it as "New" so hard for me to complain or act like they did something run. Like I said, you roll the dice.

If you want a good selection of almost ALL of King's books at fairly reasonable prices, check out Betts Books. David is the most honest book seller on the web.
