I have in the past, but not recently...also snow-shoe, sled (snowmobile)...played hockey years ago. That was a blast. Crazy thing is that even when the temp is zero, you work up a sweat, not so much sledding, but the other activities. I'll have to take a pic of my street...the snowbanks are even higher than the one pictured. Up in Calumet, residents built a wooden walkway from their door to the street, boards laid on saw-horses three feet off the ground...easier to sweep the snow off but by this time of year even those need to be shoveled.

I know, you work up a sweat even in the cold. I was never a big fan of skiing, but where I grew up, I didn't have much choice. Everyone learns how to cross country ski, and you have to participate at school activities that include skiing. Have only been on a snowmobile once, and I tried Reindeer driving in Sweden once. Fun, but "my" reindeer was very stubborn!:p

Yes, please - more pics!

You live by a river, @FlakeNoir, I am so jealous! I always dreamed of having a house right by a river or stream.
These two are of a place called Castlepoint. (The rock is actually called Castle Rock)
It isn't the Castle Rock from the Castle Rock logo, is it?

Your mountains are just beautiful, and those trees - how old are they, really?

The river is great... until it floods. :biggrin2: (Only ever been caught out badly once, usually it's fine)

I'm not sure how old those trees are, sorry.

And lastly, (yes I'm stopping now  ) these were taken on our recent holiday to Rotorua:

No, please don't stop! :)

They say that New Zealand and Norway are a lot alike, but from your pics, I can't say that I agree. Some of the footage in Lord of The Rings do look similar, but what you are posting does not.
Your sceneries seem to be much grander than the Norwegian ones, the colors are also different, and we don't have Redwood trees, just the old firs, spruces and birches.

Those are great pics. Thanks for posting them. My wife grew up in Bamberg, Germany, military brat, they were stationed there for about 11 years. Her pics of Germany are so striking. I love the picture of the sub, looks like a diesel-electric powered boat, little small for a nuc. Diesel-electric powered subs usually used more for coastal defense, shallower water type operations. Is the pic with the sub from the 80's era?

Actually it must be around 2004/2005. But I could only reach a horribly bad cellphone camera, that is why it's so blurry. I think it must be your second choice, Diesel-electric for coastal defense. It's not one of the big ones. I was afraid to even take the pic, I didn't know if I was breaking any laws. This is from the west coast of Norway, and all boats that were going north had to pass us. I had great big binoculars by the window, and some days I felt like I was watching Discovery or something. Boats, birds, a whale occasionally. It was great!

West coast of Norway and east of Iceland is prime real estate for subs. If a shooting war had ever broken out between the US and USSR during the cold war, that whole stretch of water between Iceland and west coast of Norway would have been the site of most likely the largest naval battle in history. That is/was a choke point for Soviet subs coming out of the Soviet northern fleet southward to intercept NATO shipping lanes coming from America to Europe. I would have LOVED to live there and be able to see all those subs on patrol. Thanks again for the pics, Fascinating.
