How to proceed with this SK reading group idea? I have never been in a reading discussion but once and it was pretty strict you only could talk about what was in the universe of the book not about the larger issues that the book brought out (which I thought was stupid). I will do a little more research on this.
I agree C, we should be able to discuss the larger issues the book brings out. Isn't that part of the fun? All of the King family authors are wonderful in that respect...Owen Hill and his analysis of what we believe and what truely is, Tabitha King and the nuances of character, Uncle Stevie and so many issues (domestic violence, corruption, life)... We should be able to discuss...

My two cents... Ask the inviter for a list of the groups past books. You might be surprised. My book club reads literally all genres and it is never boring. Sometimes we get into very deep discussions about the books, sometimes we talk about them for 5 mins then move on to other things. The first hour is simply drinking some wine and having snacks and chatting, then we get into the book part.

Also, an alternative that some folks have used if they aren't comfortable hosting at there house, is co-hosting with some one else. You pick the book and provide the drinks and snacks, but do it at someone else's house (probably the friend how invited you).

As for the on line book club, count me in!

Hi Guys,

I received an invitation from an aquaintance to join her reading and discussion group. Really have mixed feelings about it and my mind has been volleying pros and cons for the past week.

Guess I should feel flattered, but am anxious because:
a. This lady sells stuff, money has been really tight, and she will probably try to nudge a sale.

b. All the members of this group take turns hosting the club at their homes. My house is nice, but not great for entertaining. If I wanted to throw a party, I'd invite my friends and neighbors.

c. 'Girly Lit'...I'm worried they will be reading stuff that doesn't appeal to me. SK is my favorite author and I haven't read all of his yet. If they would like to read one of his, then it would be more appealing.

d. My 'gut' says yuck. I envision a bunch of women judging the dirty car I arrive in, my hippy type clothes, and wild hair and cringe. Yet, I like the idea of reading a book together and discussing it.

So, what do You think?
Sounds like you'd hate it. Does your local library have some sort of book group? I've enjoyed the challenge of reading a variety of books and genres through our library book group, even when I haven'[t been able to make it for the actual group discussion.

I sort of have that problem in my area. There are book groups, but most of them are The Twilight junkies or very very religious, so nothing at all satisfying as far as I'm concerned. I have read and enjoyed books from all genres, but I would hate to be limited to one, and I would despise recommending a Stephen King book and getting "the look." Or recommending Infidel and getting "the look." Etc...etc...etc.... and right down the line. The book clubs that I have the opportunity to join are very much limited to certain genres and they absolutely don't want to try anything new.

My idea of the perfect book group would be ALL genres. Make me read a Zane Grey. Make me read Barbara Cartland. Make me read "Fly Tying Made Easy."

That's how you grow and learn.
That's why I like our library group. A variety of genres and themes. I've read quite a few books that would have passed under by radar--some I've liked and some I haven't, but they all had literary merit.

Never had an opportunity to read as a group...unless you consider the various lit courses I in which I participated. Might be an interesting experience...me, I'm having trouble imagining a group of dedicated readers getting into some stories. Which would make the participation interesting...most scientific. Maybe Fahrenheit 541? Everyone shows up w/a kindle. Matches. Fuel...propane or kindling. Tee-shirts w/favorite rock band front and back. Party affiliation. Business cards and Tupperware samples. Could be a story in it.

Have had opportunity to participate in reading groups here...Duma Key, The Shining, The Stand...'Salem't Lot...there's a few active members who also participated, some are no longer active, active as in posting here and now. We took it slow and easy, not like most read the usual story...a chapter a day...something like that. Give everyone a chance to complete other chores in their life...like maybe the group read is secondary to a primary read the individual has going on...so slow and easy wins the race. Someone wants to read faster, fine...however you want to work it.
