Since this is the thread most cult-buffs will look at, I may as well ask here: Does anyone here have The Phantom of the Paradise blu-ray from Shout Factory and know whether it plays region B as well as A?

According to blu-ray.com it does:Phantom of the Paradise Blu-ray
But I always rather have one more confirmation from another site, if it's a mistake it's unlikely two sites make it. But I can't find reviews that mention it. I think nearly all Shout Factory releases are region A locked, but Vampire Lovers which I recently bought plays on region B.
There is a region B of Phantom of the Paradise from Arrow, but Shout Factory's has more extras, including a cast commentary.

...well you know we share a birth year.....and somehow I know we DON'T share an interest in the centerfold:D....and you are most welcome my friend....it is a great read....
True... but I did rifle through my dad's things as a young boy to seek out such magazines and there was a sort of attraction there. Can't deny that. But it only went so far. It's a complex issue and I think that's what many people don't understand. Not you though GNT; you are one of the enlightened ones.

I'm sorry Gerald - I wish I could be of more help to you here! I've had a look around online but cannot find any other sources for this DVD that list it as region B compatible. Have you tried emailing Shout Factory to ask them? If they don't respond, I would try emailing the company who you plan to buy it from. If they say that it is playable on region B machines and it turns out not to be, then you would at least be able to send it back for a refund if you saved their email.

You're probably aware of this already, but many DVD players can be hacked to make them multi-region, or to change their region. There are plenty of websites that tell you how to do it -
How to Change the Region of a DVD Player
Make Your DVD Player Region-Free in Seconds
DVD region codes and how to overcome them

Good luck!

With reviews like this, how can you go wrong... :p

'Consider the title fair warning: Raw is not for the weak of stomach.'

'Think of it as Carrie meets Animal House meets Dawn of the Dead, with subtitles.'

The Godsend (1980). My sister forced me to watch because she was too scared to watch it alone. A couple of times I made to leave, but she pulled me back and held me in place until I was hooked. I've only ever seen it that once, on TV around 35 years ago. I can't think why. It's great and should be considered a classic! It is that rarity, absolute horror without splashing gore all over. I need to know if anyone here has seen this movie!

TV Movies which should really be rerun: The Failing of Raymond, Crowhaven Farm, The Screaming Woman, and Something Evil. I don't know how they'd play now, but when something creeps you out so bad as a kid you remember it 45 years later I consider it worth a second look!

Thanks, hadn't thought about e-mailing Shout Factory, hope they respond. I wonder when they put out nearly all region A, why on a few occasions they would be B as well?

I was gonna order this from Wow HD, but they lay the responsibility about the regions with the customer.

I play blu-rays on my PS, so I'm not gonna fiddle around with that. I often think about getting a regionfree player, maybe at some point I will. Some things just don't get released here at all, like the Nightbreed Director's Cut or Watchmen the Ultimate Cut.
But with Arrow things have gotten a lot better, although usually the region A releases are still better, for De Palma's Blow Out as well: the Criterion release has Murder à la Mod (an early De Palma which I have on DVD) and an hour long conversation with the director, which are not on the Arrow release.

Alright - Holly's Horror Pick of the Day (brackets obscure division close brackets) is the one and only Manhunter, the first adaptation of Thomas Harris' EXCELLENT novel Red Dragon, and the first appearance of Hannibal Lecter on our screens.
(Honestly, if you have never read Red Dragon, stop whatever you're doing immediately and rush out and grab a copy! You will thank me, and then you will sleep with the light on for a month. :))

Red Dragon has been adapted into a film twice - once as Manhunter in 1986, and again as Red Dragon in 2002. The 2002 version featured an A-list cast recognisable from Silence of the Lambs (Anthony Hopkins as everyone's favourite psychiatrist, Anthony Heald as Dr Chilton, along with Edward Norton, Ralph Fiennes, Philip Seymour Hoffman (rest in peace, old friend... You were great, and you are sorely missed) and Emily Watson) and it had the type of budget and production values you would expect for such a great cast - but honestly, the obscure 1986 version blows it out of the water. :)

Manhunter was filmed with a lot of unknown actors on a shoestring budget. The sets are minimal (there are a lot of white walls in this film :)), the acting can be wooden at times and the whole film screams "1980s!!!" at you from the first to the last - but the tension and the suspense and the fear are cranked up masterfully to an unbearable pitch. Tom Noonan's Francis Dolarhyde (the main villain) is one of the most genuinely spooky and frightening characters I have ever seen on screen. He is a big guy, and that high-pitched voice and blank expression make him seem truly unhinged and haunting. And the opening sequence - seeing him pick the lock of the front door, climb the stairs silently and massacre the family in their beds... Good grief, that is horror at it's finest! You will look at the shadows in the corner of your bedroom at night and feel your heart pounding after that... :)

Manhunter - a film so good that you will end up loving its flaws just for being a part of it.
And once again, Red Dragon is an amazingly good book. Read it. You will love it. :)

I was an entire year late in watching The Silence of the Lambs when it first came out. A co-worker of mine kept bugging me by saying he knew how much I'd like it. When I got around to finally watching it, I remembered having seen Manhunter many years before (when I was too young to be watching movies like that). I've since seen all the Hannibal adaptations and read all the books and yes, this particular film was very well done. Nice pick.

Another zombie movie, but a great one! Mutants--French, subtitled. Scared the crap out of me, and I usually find zombies more interesting than scary. Rammbok (I think I spelled that right!), a German Z film is also very good. Mulberry Dr. was really interesting--it had some surprises for me, as did The Hamiltons. The sequel to The Hamiltons, called The Thompsons, wasn't as good, but it was all right. I have a slew of other recs, but I'll stop here :)

Hey, has anyone seen Green Room? My son bought it the other day and described it to me like this: "Not sure whether to call it a horror movie...it was sort of like having a heart attack for two hours." If I can get the little one to bed early enough, I think I need to watch this movie.
