Richie is genuinely funny in this book.

There were so many things he said that made me laugh out loud, unfortunately every joke he made in the miniseries fell flat.

The miniseries was somewhat hogtied. Lots of his jokes simply were not going to fly on a made for television series. But I agree, he was genuinely funny in the book.

Another reason I find Richie kind of hilarious is he always seems to get really scared, really quickly. How many times did IT take on the form of one of his fears? The Teenage Werewolf at 29 Neibolt, then the Crawling Eye in the sewers (not to mention the Paul Bunyan statue). Bill might think that Stan is the biggest chicken of the Losers, but Richie comes hilariously close. As soon as that amorphous silver and orange blob starts approaching, you can bet It's gonna be taking on the form of one of either Stan or Richie's fears.

This one's more subtle but Richie was the de facto rock and roll buff of the Losers, but Mike totally schools him the first day he comes down to the Barrens, listing off a surprisingly thorough list of talented all-black rock and roll/doo wop acts. And then that whole sequence with Richie insisting that he doesn't want to be a black boy as everyone else cracks up. It seems like he can't see the humor in some of his best comedy!

Good points. Also funny is how Richie's fears are rather childish, taking the form of the Saturday Matinees that he goes to see. Whereas Stan's big encounter with IT in the Derry Standpipe is probably one of the scariest vignettes in the book. Still creeps me out.

...having seen and heard King over the years, I sorta have a sneaking suspicion that Richie has just a little bit of Steve's spirit in him....
