The ebook editions of Speaks the Nightbird are on sale for only $1.99 through October. Speaks the Nightbird is the first book in the Matthew Corbett historical fiction series set in Colonial America. Here's what Stephen King said about Speaks the Nightbird:

"Given Rick McCammon's ten-year silence, I was curious about NIGHTBIRD...eager for a new dose of one of America's truly fine story-tellers...delighted it was a BIG dose...and nervous, too. 'Cause writing novels is NOT like riding a bike--you can forget how to do it. Twenty pages in, I forgot everything but the book itself.

"...an excellent story, full of tension and suspense...

"Speaks the Nightbird is a rarity in popular fiction, a book that manages to be thoughtful as well as entertaining---think 'Burn, Witch, Burn' crossed with Arthur Miller's The Crucible.

"...The week I spent listening to the nightbird every evening between eight and eleven was a very fine one."

"Mine" is a bit different from the other McCammon books I've read so far. No supernatural elements but some nasty characters. Maybe closest to Dolores Claiborne or Misery to keep up the King comparison. The book is a bit dated as the 60s references and days before computers and cell phones seem like ancient history now. But still entertaining.

Mine is one of the best suspense novels I've ever read. While it may be out-dated in techie terms (but so is The Stand, The Dead Zone, Carrie, etc.) Mine will still keep you on the edge of your seat. There are a few nasty characters inside those pages. I hope it is made into a movie at some point- it would be great to see two of Hollywood's actresses fight it out on screen in this story.

Started Mine. So far great. Better than Swan Song. Only Boys Life thats better so far. But what strikes me again is that McCammon does not have a voice. He has several. Swan Song, They Thirst, Speaks The Nightbird, Boys Life and Mine reads as if they been written by different persons. They are very different and uses different ways of advancing the story. This is not said as a critique but more as an observation. Some authors does not have a voice. Some authors have a very distinct voice that makes you know that this a story only he could write. You recognise King for example with his very distinct voice. McCammon differ from both types in that he doesn't have a voice but many. It is interesting. Wonder what the explanation is.

"Better than Swan Song" - those 4 words just boosted Mine to the top of my tbr pile! :)

Just finished "The Five" which was a very entertaining read. I was a bit apprehensive about this one since it is hard to write a decent "band" book without it being cliched or something out of the Partridge Family. This was better than Revival in how it dealt with musicians etc. Maybe the best written book from McCammon in my opinion.

He's unusual in the fact that none of his first books were rejected. I think from that point he was able to write with a higher degree of confidence!

I read The Border right before the holidays. I posted about it somewhere, but it was super and I'm going to rant about it again. I really didn't even want to read it because I wasn't in the mood for an alien story but I read it anyhow because I figured if I didn't like the story at least I'd enjoy the writing. I'm telling you, from page one I was a goner. I couldn't put it down. I can't recommend it any more than that.

The Border is a good one but I thought "Stinger" was an even better sci fi novel.
