I figured out the Mystery of the Missing Pages in my kindle version of Speaks the Nightbird!

I finished the book yesterday, and then grabbed my kindle to just skim through and see if I could find differences. Got to page 483 (the end of page count) without noticing anything left out but it still was nowhere near the end of the story and then I noticed that it said 50% completed.

Aha!!!! ;-D I kept flipping through, and the page count stayed at 483 out of 483, but my percentage changed. So that's why, when I jumped to the end previously to check if the last few lines were the same, it still said 483 out of 483. The page numbers just stop at 483.

Just a glitch, I guess!! But I am happy my kindle version of the book is complete. :D

Really great book, too! :encouragement:
My Kindle did something like that on The Fireman. It was rather obvious though because I was on maybe the 5th chapter when it went directly to the "How would you rate this book" thing. I had to use the "go to" function to skip past where it was glitching and make it behave. Weird stuff. :alien:

Working my way through "Baal." That is really a strange McCammon novel. I assume that is because it was one of his first. It has that raw 70s quality. Not a great book but certainly readable in the run of the mill horror genre kind of way.

Gotta say that MINE is up there with his best work (that I have read) so far.
Got about 100 pages to go, gripped doesn't come close! :D

"Mine" is a nasty piece of work. And I mean that as a compliment. LOL. Good book. I often find "normal" people to be more disturbing characters than the supernatural types. McCammon probably dislikes being compared to King but the comparison book there would be Misery.

I've read almost all the McCammon novels now. So it's time to rank them (excluding the couple I haven't read and the Corbett series since that it is a different animal):

1) Swan Song
2) Boy's Life (this seems to be the consensus best McCammon book)
3) They Thirst
4) Stinger (underrated!)
5) Mine
6) Usher's Passing
7) The Five (underrated)
8) The Border
9) Mystery Walk
10) Gone South
11) The Night Boat
12) Baal

Oh great. 5th book. Is it a standalone? Can I read it and understand what's going on without reading the FIRST FOUR BOOKS? arrrrrgghghghghghg!
I believe that you will be able to understand what's happening. It's a totally new 'case' that Corbett works on, so it should be alright to pick up on what's happening and also what's happened. McCammon gives the reader a short synopsis and/or refers to events from the past that, while don't tell the complete past story, let the reader know enough to figure out what happened. Oh, and yes, Rick is a striking feller plus he's got that whole Southern Charm thing going on......:biggrin2:
