So, has anyone read McCammon's early stuff? Baal, Bethany's Sin, The Night Boat, They Thirst? Opinions?
I've read them all. They Thirst is the best IMHO. The other three are 1st, 2nd and 3rd novels, I believe, and they show it. Not bad ones, just not as good as he wrote later on. But, you can see his writing power grow with each one.

Okay, I started with the short story Makeup. Pretty good. I liked how he gave us characters that were just developed enough. How he didn't just hand us the answers and the lovely irony of the ending. I love me some black humor. ;)

So I'm reading another short story now, Night Calls The Green Falcon. Also downloaded a sample of Mystery Walk, which I chose because I have me some Choctaw blood. Mine is a bit much for the Kindle edition at the moment. Next thrift shop run, I will look for his books.

There are a bunch of McCammon short stories available for free on his website.

"Night Calls the Green Falcon" is my favorite of his short stories/novellas.

An update from Rick has been posted online for anyone interested. After The Listener we'll get the final 3 Matthew Corbett books. Good times ahead!

That's a long wait for the next couple of books. McCammon seems to be red hot now so I don't fully understand the long delay if the book is written. Big mistake. I know CD is going to do special editions of a couple of his older books this year but that is not the same as a new book and it wouldn't exactly break the collector budget given the market right now.

They were originally planning to release it in October, but before they could announce it, Subterranean announced their release of the limited edition of Swan Song for October. That, along with the other two long-planned CD special editions, left a crowded Fall plate for McCammon books. I personally agree that it probably wouldn't have mattered to many fans, but I have also heard plenty of complaints from people when Subterranean would release a limited edition soon after they published one of the new McCammon novels.

I wish we were getting a new book this year as well but the delay is less disappointing than Rick's plan to retire in the near future. If I recall his plan was to write 6 more books which included The Listener and final Corbett's.

I never take retirement talk too seriously. Particularly that far in advance. King retired once. Things seem to be rolling along for McCammon's career at this point. He is doing some of his best work and getting the recognition he deserves. He should ride the tide for as long as possible and enjoy. He has earned it.

Rick has definitely earned the kudos and recognition he is getting. He has worked hard and put up with a lot of bullsh*t from behind the scenes in his career. He is a fine writer in his own right and I'm glad that he is gaining more fans each day. Plus he's the epitome of the fine 'southern gentleman' on top of that!
