Funny you should mention Shock Waves. That movie almost prevented the publication of The Night Boat. This is from the FAQ on RobertMcCammon.com:

Hunter- Rick sure has had his struggles with his publishers, eh? This is the first I knew about his trouble with Night Boat. I knew about the trouble he had with the publisher refusing to put out his 'historical romance' books (I'm assuming these were the Corbett books?). Glad he hung in there and fought!

Yes, and the struggles continue still. He touches on that in his most recent update from a few weeks ago....

News from The Border (and other places) » Robert McCammon

Just to clarify, the incident you refer to was about Speaks the Nightbird. Here's what Rick said about it back in 1998.

Robert McCammon update: December 1998 » Robert McCammon

At this point I decided also to start fresh with a new publisher.

To make this long story shorter: I ran into (collided with, actually) an editor who wanted me to change the book to make it into (my opinion here, of course) an historical romance. I will be kind to the memory of this person. We did not see eye-to-eye on anything. I simply could not make the changes I was asked to make. The book is by no means perfect and does need to be edited, but I had to draw the line somewhere.

Well, I was kind of stuck at this point because no one else wanted Nightbird. I was told that publishers were expecting a certain kind of book from me, and this wasn’t it.

My choice was to remove the book from consideration.

Just finished River of Souls a few moments ago.
Cannot. Believe. I'll. Probably. Have. To. Wait. Two. More. Years. To. Read. More. Matthew.
I'm dying here.
I'm on my way to the basement to dig out Speaks the Nightbird for a reread.

What was it like, compared to the previous? I've heard it's much shorter. Some of the reviewers have said it's more like an outrigger novel. Like a side story. Personally, I think the lengths of Mister Slaughter and Providence Rider were perfect for this series. Couldn't imagine him pumping them out in quick succession at the lengths of the first two?
I have my copy coming soon...I hope!

Just wanted to come back and say I have read both Boy's Life and Swan Song now. Absolutely loved Boy's Life, and Swan Song was pretty great too. Still have Usher's Passing on my to-read pile along with The Night Boat. Definitely want to check out his Matthew Corbett books, and more :D

It was waaaayyyy too short! A great story, but I'm always left wanting more. I just reread Speaks the Nightbird after finishing River of Souls.

Finished The River of Souls

This book truly represents the midway point of McCammon's planned 10 book series. It's the tipping point or fulcrum in the series coming in at a relatively slim 257 pages when compared to the rest of the books in the series.

Loved the story concept and I can forgive the somewhat clunky concluding chapters because it leaves Matthew Corbett in such a precarious position. Hope new character Magnus Muldoon continues to a major player in the upcoming books and dear, oh dear how will his friends - especially Berry - react to the news of Corbett's supposed demise?

It is going to be a killer wait for book 6.

McCammon is one of my favorite writers and along with Stephen King and Jim Butcher this has been a helluva of a great summer for reading!

Picked up The Hunter From The Woods which:

" continues the story of Michael Gallatin the lycanthropic hero of Robert McCammon’s 1989 classic, The Wolf’s Hour."

I finished Speaks the Nightbird and was fascinated by it. What a great book and why haven't I read this author until now?!? To remedy this I'm now on to The Queen of Bedlam. Glad to see the latest in the series is also a page turner, but 10 books in this series??? Wow!

Keep in mind that (so far) King is up to 8 Dark Tower books, and I'm pretty sure there's more coming down the pike......

You must read Boy's Life by McCammon also! After Dr. Slaughter, Providence Rider and The River of Souls, of course...

That's true, but 7 of them were already published when I read them (and number 8 is just a thread and not exactly essential to the story that connects the other 7 - not that I didn't like it, because I did, just saying). Things look a bit different when I know I'll probably have to wait for the next books in the series to be published.

I will definitely read more McCammon, I'm just warming up! Boy's Life and They Thirst (very intriguing name) - got that, thank you and kingricefan for the recommendations.
