At an uncertain creative crossroads and increasingly overshadowed by the antics of frontman Jim Morrison, the members of the Doors had reason for concern regarding the longterm future of the band when they convened to record their sixth album in late 1970. Their worst fears would soon be confirmed — but first they managed to rebound with a set of songs that served as a triumphant reminder of the band’s singular appeal.

Which is not to say that things always went smoothly during the recording of the LP, which would be titled L.A. Woman and released April 19, 1971. In fact, before they even really got started, the band had to deal with the abrupt departure of longtime producer Paul Rothchild, who ended an early listening session by insulting the Doors’ musical direction and walking out.

“We were bummed,” admitted guitarist Robby Krieger during a retrospective interview with MOJO. “Because he had done all the other ones and…it was sort of like he didn’t like the music. ‘It sounds like cocktail music,’ he said about ‘Riders on the Storm.’ We were going, ‘Oh s—, what do we do now?’ We’d never been in this position before.”

“We were giving Paul a preview and he was bored. We played the songs very badly – with Jim – but there was no chi, no energy,” added keyboard player Ray Manzarek in a separate interview. “We didn’t want to be back in [Sunset Sound Recorders], and Paul couldn’t bring us back to life. In that instant he was right. As soon as he left the room, that’s when L.A. Woman started.”

Thanks for the kind words. Ron is a heck of a player. On a whole other level than me. I learned a lot from him.

Here's yesterday's Record Store Day Haul:

Zappa 200 Motels 45 on purple vinyl
Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town on 180 gram vinyl
101ers Elgin Avenue Breakdown double album on red vinyl
Kind of Blue on blue vinyl
Social Distortion on blue vinyl

Only thing I didn't get that I wanted was the Foo Fighters EP.

Sounds like quite a haul!
Was the Foo Fighters one gone?

Roger Waters The Wall, the documentary that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall, will play on movie screens across the world for one night only nearly a year after its debut.

The film — which is co-directed by Waters and Sean Evans — screened three times in September 2014 at the Toronto fest. On Sept. 29, it will play on big screens with a new bonus feature: an “in conversation” segment with Waters.

Consequence of Sound reports that the event will include a screening of Roger Waters The Wall plus a chat with the artist, who originally wrote the piece for Pink Floyd based on his own experiences growing up in post-war England. The Wall album, from 1979, is one of the biggest-selling LPs in chart history.

Last year, Waters referred to the documentary as a “protest movie.” The film includes concert footage from Waters’ three-year solo tour in which he played The Wall in its entirety as well as behind-the-scenes footage from France and Italy of Waters visiting the World War I cemetery where is grandfather is buried, the beachhead where his father died during a World War II battle and more.

“We were a big family on the road, 189 of us, give or take the odd Snoozy Walrus,” Waters said of the upcoming wide release of the movie. “We were happy, by and large, and I am really happy to welcome everyone at Fathom and Picturehouse aboard. I know, I know — mixing metaphors. Where was I? Oh yeah, with your help, this coming 29th September will be the perfect way to remember not just our loved ones but the other guys loved ones — fallen, living and as yet unborn.”

In other Waters news, a remastered edition of his 1992 solo album Amused to Death will be available on July 24. It remains his most recent studio album. Since then, he’s released a live album, a compilation record and an opera.

As the Moody Blues eye the impending 50th anniversary of their landmark 1967 album Days of Future Passed, bassist John Lodge is entertaining thoughts of a special celebration.

Though he’s still somewhat cagey regarding details, Lodge told ABC News Radio that he’d love to welcome former members Ray Thomas and Mike Pinder back into the fold for the occasion — though there are some logistical wrinkles that need to be worked out first.

Neither Thomas, who left the lineup in 2002, or Pinder, who exited in 1978, appear to be interested in a full-time return to active duty, which complicates things for Lodge and his fellow Moodies leader, Justin Hayward; as he put it, whatever they do with the duo will entail “finding a way of doing it without them having to tour.”

“If it works, I think it will be fantastic because it’ll work because it’s a natural thing to do,” pointed out Lodge. “I’m not trying to force it to work. It’ll be because it’s supposed to be.”

While they’ve been out of the band for some time, Pinder and Thomas remain very much a part of Lodge’s musical thoughts — they guest on his upcoming solo effort 10,000 Light Years Ago — as well as his personal life. “They’ve been an integral part of my life and you can’t dismiss that,” he explained. “You know, it’s locked in there. It’s part of the gene.”

The Moody Blues, who were inducted into the Ultimate Classic Rock Hall of Fame late last year, are currently in the middle of a North American tour.

According to The Pulse Of Radio, an undetermined number of U2 fans in the U.K. who picked up a vinyl copy of the band's latest album, "Songs Of Innocence", as a Record Store Day exclusive on Saturday (April 18) got a surprise: instead of getting the Irish supergroup's current effort, they instead found themselves in possession of a copy of TOOL's 1992 debut EP, "Opiate" — which wasn't even part of the Record Store Day lineup of items.

The error was reported by several users on Twitter, which led to one person joking, "I can see why U2 fans feel shortchanged getting a TOOL EP instead of their U2 album. They normally get four tools for the price of one."

It's not clear how many copies of the U2 album were affected, but one U.K. label manager said "a good chunk" were "sleeved at the wrong pressing plant."

"Songs Of Innocence" was released last fall and was initially issued as a free download into every iTunes account in the world.

The backlash against what many perceived as an unwanted intrusion into their iTunes accounts led Apple and U2 to apologize, with the former issuing instructions on how to remove the album from one's account.

There's no word yet on how fans can exchange or return their copies of the TOOL EP, although such pressings have been known to become collector's items.

Well, Bono has turned into quite a tool so I guess it's appropriate.

If I had one of those neural neutralizers from MIB I'd erase the memory of all post Achtung Baby music!

DISTURBED is rumored to be recording its first album since 2010's "Asylum".

Although there has been no official confirmation on the matter, there are rumblings that the band is working with producer Kevin Churko, who has helmed the latest efforts from a number of popular hard rock and heavy metal acts, including FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, IN THIS MOMENT, PAPA ROACH and HELLYEAH.

If the rumor mill is correct, at least some of the recording sessions are taking place at Churko's The Hideout Recording Studio in Las Vegas.

The members of DISTURBED have offered no updates about possible recording or touring activity since the band went on hiatus in late 2011.

DISTURBED guitarist Dan Donegan recently posted pictures on his Facebook page of a family vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico.

For his part, DISTURBED singer David Draiman revealed a few months ago that he was co-writing and producing some "baby bands" — though he didn't divulge more details because of a non-disclosure agreement.

Back in January, Draiman gave fans a "non-update" on the status of DISTURBED via his Twitter account, writing: "OKAY… 1. Disturbed WILL REUNITE…SOMEDAY. 2. I HAVE NO IDEA WHEN 3. NO CLUE ON Device EITHER – OOH WA AH AH AH."

His tweet echoed comments made to The Pulse Of Radio back in 2013 about DISTURBED's eventual return. "DISTURBED will reunite when the time comes," he said at the time. "When we feel it's right, when [Draiman's side project] DEVICE has run its course, when everybody's in the right head space and we're feeling re-inspired and we're ready to go back at it and the itch is itching hard enough, it'll happen."

After DISTURBED went on hiatus in late 2011, Draiman teamed with former FILTER guitarist Geno Lenardo to create DEVICE.

Draiman has also been spending time with his wife, model/wrestler Lena Yada, and their son, Samuel, who was born in September 2013
