Can't say I'd do it--too scary if you don't know the person. Even if you know them, crap can happen.
So true. Sometimes it can be worse because you know them. It' s just tricky. I know from my last experience not too long ago that it can be hell. The person I was sharing was a work colleague who I got on great with at work but when it came to living together it was a nightmare. I realized soon after moving in that she was a complete control freak. She needed to know everything, where I was going, what for, when I was coming back, who I was going to see, etc.... and if I held back or was vague she'd be all frosty with me. It was hard because she offered me hospitality when I hit a really rough patch in my relationship so I felt I owed her but she was slowly smothering me. I had to get out and I doubt I will try the experience again, if given the choice.
Sorry, Not_Nadine probably not very encouraging ... But I know it can be great too, it's just the luck of the draw really.

Yup. I had one bad experience and that was enough for me. She brought different guys home each night of the weekend, teased them, then said "Well, good night." Can't count how many times someone slammed out of the apartment. I was constantly tense, thinking that one night someone was going to decide 'No' didn't mean much after all that, I would have to step in, and we'd both get beat up. Then she skipped out right before rent was due one month. I'm normally pretty calm (a Bassett Hound in the kennel of life--lol), but that night I lost it and tore the apartment apart while she hid in her room. It was probably a good idea for her to do that. I don't think I've ever been that angry.

Sorry, N_N. I'm sure there are positive stories, too.

wow. Now that is bad. Reminds me of one time where I was living with a gay couple in London. They were great to live with when they got on but when they had fights, oh my! It turned physical a good few times. One of them was a body builder (I saw him broke a chair with his bare hands in a fit of anger once ) and I was always scared for the other one. In the end we all got evicted because of the constant noise.

But there's gotta be some positive stories, like you say :)

Until I got married no roommate ever worked out. Even my brother. Even my best friend from high school. I mean we are all reconciled now, but itwas well ropy for a long time. Some of it admittedly my fault, some of it not. Even had moments of extereme awkwardness and anger and frustration with my husband. With him there was commitment and love. Good luck.
