What is the scariest book you have ever read? I'm looking for a good "stormy night" read. Doesn't necessarily have to be an SK book since I've read most of his work. Just want to read a good spine-tingler.

If you haven't read 'Salem's Lot I'd recommend that.What is the scariest book you have ever read? I'm looking for a good "stormy night" read. Doesn't necessarily have to be an SK book since I've read most of his work. Just want to read a good spine-tingler.
I've never read The Exorcist.....the movie is probably the scariest I've ever seen, though. How does the book compare?......I have the book, just haven't read it.
...I was bored silly by the book...but that's just moi....

The Wolfen by Whitley Strieber is one that comes to mind that actually made me looking ahead a couple of times to see if the people were still alive. It's very rare I do that, but with this book I really couldn't help myself.
To be scared Pet Semetary but for a true athmospheric chill up your spine.... Shirley Jacksons The Haunting of Hill House!!

Didn't we just do this thread a couple weeks ago? Deja Huh? Big front runners were Exorcist, It, and Pet Semetary? Yeah...but who cares? These questions are always fun, so...
Instead of Exorcist, or any King, this time I'll say...uh...well, tell the truth, the book that scared me the most, when I was about five, was some Time-Life crime volume featuring a lengthy section about the Manson murders--with pics (piggies on the wall in dried blood, corpses--real ones). My older sister, bless her morbid heart, read and explained the whole thing to me. Had nightmares about evil, dirty hippies breaking in and killing my entire family for WEEKS. Thanx, sis.

Of Mr. King's books, Full Dark, No Stars and IT are probably my nominees for scariest. Another 'spine-tingler' that is creepy as hell is Ghost Story. I'm not much of a Straub fan, but that one really creeped me out.

Know exactly what you mean. One of the most scary books i've read was a book by Donald Rumbelow about Jack the Ripper. It had crime scene photos in it and the photos of Mary Kellys mutilated body (well rest of a body) was truly frightening. The pics was taken in 1888 so the pics werent as sharp as nowadays but that was probably lucky. Don't know if i could have stomached seeing a sharp image of that scene.
Oh GOD, I have that book! Thankfully, I was an adult by the time I saw those photos.
I won't even have a copy of that book in my house or the movie. It might just be me, but when I was reading that book I could feel an evilness coming from it. I've always felt that this book has an atmosphere unlike any other book I've read. Guess you have to read between the lines of the prose, because there's not hardly any blood-shedding at all, but it certainly affected me.
I know what you mean about feeling something evil while reading a book. Sometimes, a story doesn't need blood-shedding to be terrifying.
As usual, the book is better, which, in this case, means scarier. Much scarier.
I had to sleep with the lights on for a week after seeing the movie. GUess I should buy some more light bulbs if I'm gonna read the book.
