Didn't we just do this thread a couple weeks ago? Deja Huh? Big front runners were Exorcist, It, and Pet Semetary? Yeah...but who cares? These questions are always fun, so...

Instead of Exorcist, or any King, this time I'll say...uh...well, tell the truth, the book that scared me the most, when I was about five, was some Time-Life crime volume featuring a lengthy section about the Manson murders--with pics (piggies on the wall in dried blood, corpses--real ones). My older sister, bless her morbid heart, read and explained the whole thing to me. Had nightmares about evil, dirty hippies breaking in and killing my entire family for WEEKS. Thanx, sis.

You reminded me. I keep meaning to read The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule.

I won't even have a copy of that book in my house or the movie. It might just be me, but when I was reading that book I could feel an evilness coming from it. I've always felt that this book has an atmosphere unlike any other book I've read. Guess you have to read between the lines of the prose, because there's not hardly any blood-shedding at all, but it certainly affected me.
Same here. I can't even stop to watch a minute of it when it's on TV and I'm channels surfing. Even the early scenes when nothing has happened yet are eerie. I've seen the movie beginning to end about 5 or so times, but that was when I was younger. Just the memory of it scares me these days!

I had to sleep with the lights on for a week after seeing the movie. GUess I should buy some more light bulbs if I'm gonna read the book.

at the beginning, Regan is hearing scratching which they thought was rats in the attic.

I was hearing scratching. All night....every night. I threw the book into the corner and was terrified to go near it. Turned out, my brothers bed was on the other side of the wall from mine, and he always rocked himself to sleep.

When I saw the movie (snuck in under age) I was working as a live-in babysitter. My room was in the attic. it was a dark and stormy night....the wind was blowing the branches of tree....against the roof but of course...it took me a week of no sleep before I realized what the noise was.

Other than that $&/@'n dog book, this is the only book that terrified me. And I think the dog book might just be my own fear of dogs, so maybe isn't as terrifying to others.

I'm gonna try reading it. I think I'll have my friend prepare the guestroom at her house.......just in case.

Scariest book? Dracula, those sisters freaked me out. Also 'Salem's Lot, Danny scratching on the 2nd story window!!
Salems Lot was my first King and that part with Danny was creepy.
Summer of Night by Dan Simmons still resonates with me. As skimom mentioned, Ghost Story. Straub also has a collection called The Juniper Tree and Other Stories. It really made me squirm.

I don't know what I would say the scariest is...probably IT, although the scariest scene I've ever read was in the Stand. The Shinning was also creepy. I am reading Summer of Night now and it is getting creepy, for sure. I watched The Exorcist yesterday, for the first time ever...it had been a thing for me for years...I was scared to watch it. So, I swallowed my fear and watched it. It had its creepy moments, but it wasn't what I had built it up to be in my mind. It has stuck with me a bit, though, much like Revival stuck with me for a while. I haven't read The Exorcist book, but I plan to.

Ragan travels down the stairs flipped over on her back. I saw it in the 'extra's' section on the dvd. It looked creepy, but was rather hokie (even for its time period) so I figured maybe that's why it was taken out of the film.

The vomiting was hokey. The spider scene was freaky.

I should add....in my opinion. YMMV
