Halloween (1978). This is my end-all-be-all of horror films. It scared me to death and led to years of nightmares. I love it.
The Exorcist - Of course. This one haunts you for days.
The Strangers - Probably not going to make too many people's list, but the tension in this movie is almost unbearable.
Contagion - Not really a horror film, but man it ought to be.
The Haunting (original Robert Wise film, not the crappy remake)- still holds up. Creepy as hell.
Psycho - Call me old-fashioned
The Conjuring - it goes off the rails near the end, but the first hour or so of this film is absolutely terrifying.

Only a few. I love horror movies and could go on for days about this topic.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

On my favorite podcast (Horror Movie Podcast, that is), the host made the best comment about Texas Chainsaw. I'm paraphrasing but it was along the lines of: at a certain point, you realize you no longer trust the director to deliver you to safety by the end of this film.

Brilliantly put. It's one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen. Still.

Got this idea replying to a pretty old thread.
Some of the scariest movies i remember to this day are:

Trilogy of Terror (Amelia)
1408
Carnival of Souls
Black Christmas
Magic (1978)
Freaks
Communion
Something Wicked This Way Comes.
DreamScape

Just to name a few

You've got some films listed there that are definitely outside the box on this topic. Well done!

The Deer Hunter. The last Russian Roulette scene gave me nightmares for a week. That very rarely happens with me.

Jaws. Scared the crap out of me as a SwiftPup and led to a life long fascination with sharks.
The Deer Hunter --intense film. That russian roulette scene gave me such anxiety while watching it. And Robert and Christopher had me right there with them. They were so good in that scene.

Yes. I was in my mid-20s first time I saw it. I watched it with SwiftDad on VHS and it still gave me nightmares.
