I recently spent hours online looking for the one film that scared the he11 out of me worse than any other, back in the mid to late 90s and I could never find it! I went through tonsss of online serial killers hell looking for him, I remember what he looked like, a disgusting backwood hillbilly creep and he had a sidekick buddy, and it was a documentary film of re enactments and real footage on a VHS rental.

It was the one and only time, I ever ever felt physically shaken and went all through my house at 2 in the morning, closing any and all blinds, windows, curtains, door locks, that one really put me on the edge, I just cannot remember who it was! :icon_eek:

Sounds similar to Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, one of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen.

I really loved to watch horror movies in the 80s. I would rent them, lock myself in my bedroom and turn off the lights. I was weird!

Most, I had no problems with. These two scared me into putting a light on!
Witchboard (1986)
Prince of Darkness (1987)
Couldn't tell you exactly why, but something clicked that put me on edge.

Maybe it was Alice Cooper in Prince of Darkness? Love John Carpenter and I really love that filmmakers are emulating him as well - see It Follows for a great example.

I watched Hell House on Amazon Prime last night. I thought I had read about it on here? Couldn't remember. If you're ok with found footage (I am), it's pretty darned effective. There are some really good, creepy scares in it. There's also a lot of the improvised "what the F-bomb" -type dialogue, which does get a little tiring. But still would make a great double-feature with The Houses October Built.

I think I've told this story before but Witchboard has a fond place in my memories. My best friend and I were watching it, (we were 13-14) we were alone in the house, of course we had the lights out. Her bedroom connected to the bathroom, and we were already sufficiently creeped out, when that bathroom door popped open. All by itself. We shut it, it popped open again. We were sure David was coming for us!

After some whispered conversation about who was going clear across the room for the light switch, we discovered there was a comb stuck between the door and the jamb...that's why the door kept opening. ;-D Much teenage giggling ensued...but we kept our eyes on that door the rest of the evening, just in case! ;)

Got this idea replying to a pretty old thread.
Some of the scariest movies i remember to this day are:

Trilogy of Terror (Amelia)
1408
Carnival of Souls
Black Christmas
Magic (1978)
Freaks
Communion
Something Wicked This Way Comes.
DreamScape

Just to name a few

I pretty much have a panic attack if I try to watch The Strangers.

I think I've told this story before, but this movie stuck with me.

We watched it at my inlaws house when it was first out on dvd. I had never heard of it or seen any trailers for it. The first glimpse of the Creeper guy really scared me.

Months before, I had a terrible nightmare. Starring the Creeper guy! (Remember I had never heard of this movie before we watched it.) I woke my husband up, I was sitting up in bed, pointing at the Creeper and screaming, still in the grips of my nightmare. He was even after a family member in my dream, just like in the movie.

So, he did freak me out.

I know I had never seen anything about this movie before we watched it. But, I had to of, right? Otherwise, it's just way too creepy that I dreamed of him.

Did you know that the director is an actual Creeper?

I really enjoyed The Strangers. Freaky stuff; I especially enjoyed how it used that Merle Haggard song.

The movie was scary to me because I lived out in the country, and it started to really really scare me when my parents got divorced and I was suddenly left home alone a lot of the time. The dude with the bag on his head is the stuff of nightmares; The only real problem with the movie is how stupid the protagonists are.

I hear you, but smart protagonists = no movie (ever see Open Water 2: Adrift? Talk about a group of idiots...). My parents were divorced when I was pretty young and was also a latchkey kid who would often be left alone on the weekend evenings. All it took was a movie preview from something like Friday the 13th (1980) or When a Stranger Calls to make me lose my s**t.

I never knew this until a few days ago but when I was a kid and lived in a trailer with my parents someone busted out my bedroom window trying to get in. Good thing I never slept in there.

I'm curious to see if anyone on here will list the new version of IT as one of the scariest movies they've ever seen.

The Exorcist. I saw it when I was around ten and at a sleepover at a friend's house. Apparently, her parents rented the movie and thought it was perfectly acceptable to have us watch with them. I couldn't sleep at all that night and felt so sick the mother had to give me medicine. Was petrified of the attic for a good year after. Have never been able to bring myself to watch it again. *shudder*
