The Moving Finger--a short that never fails to freak me the frack out.
Night Flier--another short that gets to me, and the airplane scene...yikes.
Library Policeman--a great little freak out from beginning to end. Ardelia Lortz in general is just wrong. And the whole story feels like you're watching someone elses' fever dreams. It's a weird little tale.
Besides the many short stories that have the ability to scare the bejeezus out of me, there's also:
Salem's Lot--I grew up in a small town very similar to the Lot, and the first time I read the book I was just a kid. I slept with my Bible under my pillow for a month!
Duma Key--I find this to be an incredible read, and it is in fact one of my top 5 most favorite SK novels. But the first time I read it, it gave me a serious case of the heebee jeebies.
IT--there's not necessarily a lot of scary scenes in this book for me, but there's a lot of really disturbing ones. Especially when it comes to Hockstetter. He made my skin crawl way worse than Pennywise! But, like Duma Key, this book is in my top 5...
I could go on, but I'll stop now. :biggrin2:

In Bag of Bones
when Mike Noonan hears a child's laughter in the dark lake house and Bunter's bell.

In Pet Sematary
when Louis goes back to the Micmac burial ground with Gage and encounters the Wendigo.

In The Dark Half
when Thad Beaumont stabs himself in the hand with the pencil because Stark was gaining control. Plus the dreams Thad had.

In The Tommyknockers
when Gard finds out what was in Bobbi's shed. The green light and the people trapped in the contraptions. It gives me chills just thinking about it.

Also the scenes already mentioned from: Gerald's Game, The Shining, and Lisey's Story.

There's quite a lot in Pet Semetary that would fit right in here, but what frightened me the most was the very logical and calculated way in which Louis went about

researching how and going about digging up Gage's body

I don't really feel scared when reading his works but "The Shining" had some moments that chilled me, like the elevator running on it's own or the dead woman in the tub.

That scene in the Stand where Trashys dying of radiation poisoning is especially scary when it's 2 am and it's illustrated

Wayoftheredpanda - Actually, while the vintage "ghostly elevator" scene is a little "creepy" as you say, to me it is more a masterpiece scene of the supernatural! It really drives home the imaginative sights and sounds of the "vintage masquerade ball" with ghosts dancing and partying in the Overlook Hotel! Perhaps flappers exiting the Otis elevator from the 1920s or 1930s or so. The mask and party favors on the elevator floor. The colorful glittering confetti. There are many scenes in this miniseries that bring out and enhance the reality of ghosts. It follows Kings book faithfully. :thumb: :typing:

Are we talking about the book or the mini series? I haven't watched the miniseries yet but what all you just described was already detailed in the novel during the elevator scene.

I agree that IT is more disturbing than it is really scary, the scene with IT turning into the Hantsel and Gretel witch was a great example of this, the way it was worded, the way Bev slowly begins to realize that there's something off about the old woman and the apartment, IT as Bevie's dad appearing in the Pennywise suit, telling her all the horrible things he wanted to do to her.

Wayoftheredpanda - Actually BOTH and a vivid imagination. I especially have plenty of that which really brings it to "life!" IMO the more imaginative you are, the more engaging it becomes. The sights. The sounds, The smells. The colors. The season. I faithfully read the book and watch both movies every year without fail. Never gets boring. :typing::thumbs_up:

The whole first act of the Stand was very frightening when I really think about it, the way King wittily describes how fast this disease is spreading and how the most minor sneeze can spread Trips in a whole area. I really though about the first act today as we were talking about the possibility of a super-disease in biology.

Salem's Lot - The whole damn book, just take your pick. But for lordy's sake, the one scene that still gives me chills even thinking about it is
the vampire kid hanging out the window and scratching at the window-pane. I can hear that in my mind every...freaking...time.

Also, the ending of One for the Road.

I contrarily find this the funniest scene in the book, Dan-pire thinks he’s getting some fresh blood tonight only for Mark to overpower him with a toy cross. Really the whole message of Salem’s lot is to not lie to your mom about going to your friends house to look at toy trains.

I always interpreted that scene as exemplifying the power of belief, rather than the physical nature of the artifact being used as a shield.
