Oh you did not just call my Ewan an embarrassment... ;)

I don't think it is a story about Scotland being on life-destroying drugs, I think it is a human condition story. You should be proud, I think it held more layers than what we sometimes first see.

And.... Ewan is awesome.

Just found this Flake, my sentiments exactly.

To me the semi autobiographical (Renton/ Rentboy is definitely based on Irvine Welsh himself) Trainspotting is a fantastic book. Ok it does show the dark side of life, but definitely doesn't sensationalize drug taking. For me it's a coming of age book and a great backlash at what Thatcherism (right wing political party politics) had done to the UK back in the early 80's. Renton was a really intelligent character, but because of his poor working class upbringing never had a chance. Very poignant to me.

:thumbs_up: Well said. Long time since I've read it but good book, and brilliant movie. Showing the darker side of reality (and that life is some people's reality) is nothing to be ashamed of. I've been fortunate enough to travel and have noticed there really are good and bad areas within all countries/cities/villages/estates etc...that's life.

Ooh and I love Scotland, this year alone I've visited Edinburgh and Glasgow twice, and also been to the Highlands and Loch Ness.

I've read every Irvine Welsh book,Ally. I think they are all great books, plus most have connections to Trainspotting . Have you read the prequel Skagboys? Based around 1982,the year I left school, and Renton's post school years. Did I tell you about my review for Skagboys? If you pick up a paperback copy, and go to back page, there's a load of mini reviews. Mine's the first one.Begbie sylee.

Here you are talking about scotland and not mentioning Gabaldon! Her first book takes place entirely in Scotland and is very good. The best in the whole Outlander series in my opinion. Takes up many beliefs too. Been there once visiting a friend. We went to Hadrians wall. The wall the Romans built across the whole country to keep the Scots(or Picts) out.

I watched a documentary last week hosted by Tony Robinson, where he followed in the footsteps of Queen Victoria and Albert on their three week tour of Scotland in the 19th century. Sad how they forcibly removed the Crofters of the Highlands after the Jacobite rebellion. Those rich lords up there in Scotland sure loved their hunting back then.
