Every year my brother and I try to outdo each other in finding the perfect birthday gift for each other. This year it was easy: Cemetery Dance published two signed limited editions of Scott Smith novels A Simple Plan and The Ruins. $60 each was a very reasonable price for a signed limited (each is only one of 768) AND I was able to get the same edition number for each book, and that number matches my brother's birth date (516=May 16th).

Rather than hold onto these until next May, I'm just going to give them to my brother as a special surprise gift. He's a big Scott Smith fan, and I'm sure he'll be floored!

I have these vines in both my front and back yard that the previous owner put in as a type of ground cover. You would be amazed at how insidious they are and difficult to control once they take hold. In some places they go up the trees maybe 50 feet or more and are as thick as your fist. Almost impossible to remove or kill. You could probably pore gasoline on them and set fire to them and they would be back the next year. A real marvel of nature. I didn't care much for "The Ruins" because it struck me as one of those books written to be made into a movie (and not a very good one), but it brought to mind how something that appears to be as mundane as a vine can be tenacious. You wouldn't want to be on the bad side of something like that. I liked "A Simple Plan" but maybe only because Billy Bob Thorton was in the movie.

You'll get the award for 'Best Brother Of The Year' for sure! I thought about getting these editions, but while I LOVED A Simple Plan, I wasn't too impressed with The Ruins. I thought it could have been better. I also need to save my $$ for future King books right now....

He'll be floored allright. Probably won't be able to get up in a week after that KO. I have read The Ruins but not a Simple plan. Any good?
A Simle Plan is a great book. It takes the question 'What would you do in this situation?' to the max! Great characters and a great story. The film is a good one, too. Billy Bob Thornton will break your heart.

Sounds interesting. Only read the Ruins and i thought it lacked something. It read more like a screenplay for a movie than a book i thought. Saw the movie too by the way.

I think that, for me anyway, what The Ruins lacked was a 'heart'. There really wasn't very much character developement which made it hard to care about any of them. Probably better than what I could write, but just not a stellar achievement.
