Wow, two people were charged seperately in the baby's death (the Dad and then babysitter), the baby sitter was let go but the Dad is convicted and then it comes out later that the siblings actually did it? Remind me to never get arrested for anything in this town! Sounds like bungled police work to me....

Good thing there is no death penalty eh?

He was charged, but had not been convicted.

As a teen I did a lot of babysitting. I was a live-in sitter Sunday night to Friday morning, then usually got jobs Fri and Sat nights and sometimes days on the weekend.

One family I sat for had five or six kids and they were the worst kids I ever dealt with. One boy had me busy trying to get a knife off him, while the other boys stuffed the one year old into a box and jumped up and down on it. The oldest (I think she was the only girl ) went into the kitchen and yelled "peanut butter" and they all ran and sat around the table. And she and I fed them sandwich after sandwich, until the parents got home. They wanted me to stay but I said no way. Then the dad takes off his belt and says he'll leave that with me, and tells me to hit with the buckle.

I was scared I'd get in trouble over the bruises from them jumping on the baby...no chance was I going to hit them.

Anyway, over the years there has been more then one instance of me refusing to babysit for people because of self-preservation.

And foster care brings a lot of other concerns to. My aunt used to do short-term foster care, and often the kids would call the non-custodial parent and tell them where they were staying. Drunk, drugged up, parents would show up at her house trying to either get the kids, or get money.

Oh dear, AnneMarie - this is so sad. There are a lot of cases like this in Manitoba. One little girl was starved, beaten, made to sleep on the concrete floor of the basement naked, etc.

They finally killed her (I think the stepfather was convicted) but the mother had done nothing to stop him. They found her body in a shallow grave and they had kept on collecting the benefits for her after her death.

I babysat at one house when I was about 15 that was so dirty, everything in the place felt sticky - like it had never ever been cleaned. I only went there that one time, then told them I could not babysit after that.

Thinking back, I should have got my Mom to call Child Protection Services, but back in the 70s nobody wanted to interfere in other people's 'privacy'.

Manitoba sitting on report into child's death until after byelections | CTV News

"Phoenix was killed by her mother, Samantha Kematch, and the woman's boyfriend, Karl McKay, after repeated abuse. Both were convicted of first-degree murder in 2008.

The pair tortured and beat Phoenix over many months before she died of extensive injuries on a cold basement floor in the couple's home on the Fisher River reserve.

She was buried in a shallow grave near the community dump and Kematch continued to collect child subsidy cheques.

The inquiry heard that authorities had been contacted with allegations that Phoenix was being abused shortly before her death. A social worker visited Kematch, but left without seeing Phoenix and closed the child's file.

The girl was murdered three months later."
