What is your favorite horror novel ? Mine is The Exorcist .. don't get me wrong , SK is my favorite author and I love most all of his books... IT is right up in line with The Exorcist.. but I have to say that The Exorcist scared the **** out of me. Perhaps because it touches something 'real' within me.. I'm not sure why. Even the movie... I remember seeing it at the drive in and WOW... I think that is the reason I love HORROR!

The Exorcist is the only thing that has EVER scared the *** outta me. Stephen's stories don't scare me because I've dealt with most of his characters in life (not the far-fetch ones, but the human sort.) I've read The Exorcist and I've seen the movie and it truly upsets me. I don't think there is anything else that can do so . . .if so, I don't want any part of it. I can not watch The Exorcist without being made upset. And know this . . .I am a strong one.

Thomas Tryon's The Other followed closely by SK's Carrie. I read both as a teenager and they not only scared me but left deep impressions. The Other wins only because the writing is at a literary level that makes the horror of it so much more profound.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Carrie White though.

Why do you think it scares/upsets you? I have pondered this question for years... and I believe it scares me in a different-true way because of 'what' it is. What it deals with. The 'soul' . It's real for me.. for most. Demons/Devil

I would place modern horror as belonging to two epochs, BSK and ASK. Before Stephen King I would consider The Exorcist an excellent choice and definitely my favorite. Blatty's blend of horror and religion touched a genuine nerve when it first appeared. After King, or In the Year of the King, if you prefer, I would go with The Shining. What could be more horrific than a child in deadly peril?

The movie scares me so that I can no longer watch it. I've seen it perhaps a dozen times in my younger years, but not for quite some time now. It's just too... I can't explain it.

I know what you mean . . .other horror movies have never come close to upsetting me as much.

Audra Hilton . . .I think it bothers me so because I grew up in a somewhat religious household . . .one filled with human devils. Back then I believed all that I was taught about religion and by believing, it put a lot of fear in me . . .the grownups around me always made me feel as if I were bad . . .I was going to go to hell . . .because I did not abide by the bible. I finally realized that those grownups were full of ****. The true devils were them . . .but still, The Exorcist bothers me . . .

Doggone, hate these kinda noodle-scratchers. We talkin scariest, or just all around favorites? Golly gosh geeze-um crow, I dunno.

Tell yez, if we're talkin scariest, I gotta think back to when I could actually BE scared by a book, and guess what? It's either IT or, ayuh, The Exorcist.

My mom had me seeing demons around every corner, so ol Ecchorcist gave me the willies. But IT just kept going and going with the willies. I was about the same age as the kids in the book, and it hit me in all the right creep zones.

Pet Semetary was pretty mean, too.

I remember in college reading The Exorcist and just not being able to do much else while I read it. I was gripped. The movie, frankly, was a bit of a letdown for me. It just couldn't match up. I'm not sure, other than To Kill A Mockingbird, that any other book has held that sway when I read it, and Mockingbird isn't a horror novel.

I really liked The Dead Zone. I don't know if it's "horror," but it kept my attention and still holds it today.

I saw the movie first ( The Exorcist) .. at the drive in when I was around 10 .. and it scared the 'hell-o' out of me.. lol.. then read the book a few years later and all I can say is WOW! The next 'movie' that scared me was The Shining when I was around 12 or 13. I have been hooked on HORROR since. And began my life long journey in reading... I dunno.. I just love being scared!!!! And I found that books... especially well written books by SK, where the best place to get that thrill. So both of those movies, The Exorcist and The Shining weren't let downs before me... I suppose because I saw them before reading the books. They brought me to want to read the books.. and now, seeing a movie made 'after' a book is a let down to me.. but I still enjoy watching movies.
